Lot 24. Thurman Munson Catcher’s Mitt Given to Tommy John. We have no evidence that Munson ever used this glove in a game or in the bullpen. During the 1979 season, John’s locker was next to Munson’s. After a game a couple of months before Munson’s tragic death, they were discussing their families. John mentioned that his son Tommy was a Little League catcher. Munson suggested that young Tommy should have a good glove and pulled a full-sized MacGregor Professional Model Prohide mitt from his locker. The glove shows good use, with possible re-stitching in the palm. Inside, a couple of foam pads provide additional padding. Could Munson have used this glove in the minors? We simply don’t know. As described here, the glove comes with a Letter of Authenticity from Tommy John.

The Yankee catcher joined Reggie Jackson, Bucky Dent, Ron Guidry and Piniella in signing the 11.25” x 15.25” plaque before it was laminated. Each player signed on his image. Munson’s autograph displays as ex-m 6 against a dark background. The other signatures are nm 7 or nm-m 8. Kevin Keating authenticated the autographs. The plaque is from the Tommy John Collection.
