Lot 188. New York Yankees Assignment Agreement Signed by HoF Executive George M. Weiss. Red Smith said of Weiss: “He was incomparably the ablest baseball executive who ever lived, and perhaps the most self-effacing.” Weiss began his career in baseball in 1919 at the age of 24 by purchasing the Eastern League’s New Haven team. In 1929 he left for Baltimore of the International League and later accepted a job with the Yankees. He proceeded to build a strong farm system and subsequently held the job of Yankees’ general manager from 1947 to 1960. During his tenure, the Yankees won 10 pennants and seven World Series. In 1962, he became the first president of the New York Mets. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971 and died in 1972. In a document dated Aug. 25, 1950, he assigns two players to a Yankees’ farm club. His uncommon signature is nm-m 8. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
