Lot 151. Autographs of 13 Boston Braves or Red Sox – Williams, Cronin, DiMaggio, Jethroe, Etc. Unless otherwise noted, these signatures are nm-m 8 or better on 3” x 5” unlined index cards. Ted Williams and Joe Cronin share a government postcard dated 1947 with Rip Russell and Tex Hughson. The postcard has scrapbook residue on the back. Individual cards are signed by Red Sox players Walt Dropo, Dom DiMaggio, Bill Goodman, Earl Johnson (personalized, 3.25” x 4.5” card), Mel Parnell, Birdie Tebbetts and Al Zarilla (1950 Bowman card glued to index card). The Braves’ signers are Bob Elliott and Sam Jethroe (steel-tipped pen autograph, smudged). On April 18, 1950, Jethroe became the Braves’ first African-American player, the seventh in MLB and fourth in the N.L. The Red Sox’s color barrier was the last to come down, in 1959.
