Lot 99. Zane Grey’s 3 Early 1900s Books on Baseball. Widely recognized for his western novels, Grey attended the University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship and subsequently played in the minor leagues. His baseball experiences inspired two novels and a collection of short stories. His novel “The Short-Stop” was published in 1909, followed by “The Young Pitcher” in 1911 and “The Redheaded Outfield and Other Baseball Stories” in 1915. Our consignor spent years collecting all three books, which are rarely offered together. All are vg or vg-ex hardbacks. “The Short-Stop” is the 1914 fourth printing; “The Young Pitcher,” an apparent first edition; and “The Redheaded Outfield,” a 1948 edition in a vg dust jacket that has tape reinforcement on the blank side.
