Lot 149. 1887 N172 Old Judge Pud Galvin (HoF) Graded VG + 3.5 by PSA. In this photo, which shows excellent contrast, Galvin leans on a bat in his right hand and has his left hand at his side. Only Cy Young pitched more innings than Galvin, who won 361 games during his 19th century career.

Lot 151. 1887 N172 Old Judge Abner Dalrymple (Pittsburg) Graded 70 EX+ 5.5 by SGC. Strong card nicely centered with a very clean back. What appears to be an indentation in the upper left corner seems to be what keeps it from grading higher. The “0” series Type 2 card, numbered 0232, shows the Pittsburg(h) left fielder with his hands on his hips.

Lot 152. 1888 N172 Old Judge Fred “Sure Shot” Dunlap SGC-Graded 60 EX 5. The card identifies Dunlap as “Capt., Pittsburghs.” The pose is interesting, the photo contrast is sharp and the back is clean. Dunlap was one of the best players of the 1880s. In fact, in 1910, Al Spink wrote that “Fred Dunlap was far and away the greatest second baseman that ever lived.” SGC dates the card as 1887, but it’s an 1888 example.

Lot 154. 1887 N172 Jocko Fields (Pittsburgh) Graded Good 2 by Global (GAI). This is a tough card to grade, but a “2” doesn’t strike us as Solomonesque. The photo contrast is relatively strong, and the front would grade ex except for an apparent scratch in the upper right corner. The blank back shows evidence that before it was moved into a plastic slab, it resided in an album. This is a Type 2 card from the 1887 “0” series.

Lot 155. 1888 N172 Old Judge Smiling Al Maul (Pittsburgh) Graded 50 VG-EX 4 by SGC. Centered toward the bottom, the front has an ex or better appearance, including a strong photograph. A horizontal crease well toward the bottom and apparent only on the clean blank back dictates the grade. SGC lists 1887 as the date for the card, but it’s from the 1888 series.
Winning Bid $218
Lot 156. 1887 N172 Old Judge Pop Smith (Pittsburg) Graded VG-EX 4 by Global (GAI). Showing Smith reaching for a baseball, the card is #0221 from the “0” series, Type 2. Centered toward the bottom, the front has an ex appearance. The line extending from Smith’s left knee appears to be in the photo, which shows excellent contrast, rather than a crease. The blank back has light marks consistent with time in an album. Smith was born in Canada. In 1890, he was captain of the N.L. Boston Beaneaters.
