Lot 235. “Street & Smith’s 1940 (College) Football Year Book” – the Publisher’s Inaugural Edition. Street & Smith’s annual made its debut in 1940 with an illustrated cover. The pro version first appeared in 1963. In 98 extensively illustrated pages, this publication provides college schedules and regional surveys of the upcoming season. Among the players pictured, usually in action photos, are Tom Harmon, the 1940 Heisman Trophy winner, and Bruce Smith, who earned the award in 1941; George Franck, Frankie Albert, Norm Standlee, Jackie Robinson (with UCLA), John Kimbrough, Paul Christman and Jack Jacobs. NFL “Pro-Football” 1954 and 1959 Yearbooks, the 1961 NFL Yearbook and Potsy Clark’s “Football.” The yearbooks each contain results of the previous season, league leaders, player photos and rosters for the upcoming season. The page count drops from 80 in 1954 to 64 in 1959 and 48 in 1961. These publications are vg-ex; the staples were moved from the 1954 edition, and then it was re-stapled. Clark played football and the University of Illinois and then coached college and pro teams, including the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1937 and 1938 and the Detroit Lions in 1940. His 1937 softcover book “Football” provides instructions on playing the game in 32 illustrated pages. Vg-ex.
