Lot 95. Oscar Taveras Mint 9 to Gem Mint 10 Autograph on a Gem Mint OML Selig Baseball. At the outset of the 2014 season, after six seasons in the minors, Taveras was rated the second best major league prospect. His batting style and strong arm in the outfield produced comparisons with fellow Dominican Republic native Vladimir Guerrero. Called up from the minors in May 2014 by the St. Louis Cardinals, he hit a home run in his second at bat. After another stint in the minors, Taveras returned to the Cardinals on June 30. He batted .239 for the season and then delivered three hits in seven at bats in the playoffs. Tragically, Taveras died in an auto accident on Oct. 26 in the Dominican Republic. In a statement, William DeWitt, Jr., the Cardinals’ chairman, said, “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time.” Taveras signed this ball only days after completing the 2014 season. The autograph has been authenticated by Kevin Keating and also comes with a JSA Authentication Basic Cert. Winning Bid $50.
