Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier Signed “SI” Previewing “The Fight of the Century.”
Lot 3. Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier Signed “SI” Previewing “The Fight of the Century.” Two of boxing’s best heavyweights met for the first time on May 8, 1971 at Madison Square Garden. Following a grueling fight that landed both boxers in hospitals, Frazier retained the world heavyweight championship with a unanimous decision. It was Ali’s first professional loss. “Sports Illustrated” previewed the bout in its March 1 issue by comparing “the slugger (Frazier) and the boxer (Ali).” Artist Robert Handville provided the illustration for the cover and for an article inside that looks at the Willard-Johnson, Dempsey-Tunney, Louis-Conn and Marciano-Charles fights. Both Ali and Frazier placed strong mint 9 to gem mint 10 signatures on the magazine cover. The signatures stand out boldly against a yellow background. Both JSA Authentication and Kevin Keating authenticated the signatures. JSA has provided a full Letter of Authenticity. The complete magazine is present. This is one of the best Ali-Frazier offerings from our consignor’s collection. Current Bid $92.
