“You Gotta Be a Football Hero,” the “Yale Society Two-Step” and Other Sheet Music.

Lot 246. “You Gotta Be a Football Hero,” the “Yale Society Two-Step” and Other Sheet Music. Twelve pieces of sheet music from 1894-1946. The two earliest selections are the “Yale Society Two-Step” by Chas. L. van Barr, 1894, f, and a Harvard song, “The Gridiron King,” Richmond K. Flecher, 1906, pages separated, otherwise g-vg. One other song is tied to a specific school: “Victory (Ohio) Wesleyan, Beverly Kelly and Dale Bartholomew, 1927, ex. “You Gotta Be a Football Hero (to Get Along with the Beautiful Girls)” has printed lyrics inside the cover for 26 colleges and universities. Al Sherman and others wrote the song, published in 1933. The sheet music has a name at the top and otherwise has a vg-ex appearance with small splits at the top and bottom of the spine. Five songs were written for movies: “Hello Baby,” Herb Madigan, et. al., 1930, vg+ with writing on the front cover, written for “The Forward Pass”; “Maybe It’s Love,” movie with the same title, Sidney D. Mitchell, et. al., 1930, g-vg; “Stay As Sweet As You Are,” Mack Gordon and Harry Revel, 1934, ex-m, from “College Rhythm”; “It’s Love I’m After,” Sidney D. Mitchell, 1936, name on cover, otherwise vg-ex, from “Pigskin Parade”; and “Love Is A Random Thing,” George Marion Jr., 1946, g-vg, from “Toplitzky of Notre Dame.” The other songs are: “All American Girl,” Al Lewis, 1932 (2 copies), one ex and one vg, and “Cheerleader Charlie,” James Cavanaugh, et. al., 1935, vertical fold, vg. “All American Girl” has nicely executed cover artwork, while the cover for “Cheerleader Charlie” is bizarre. The back cover of “It’s Love I’m After” has an ad for a “treasure chest” of Shirley Temple songs. Minimum Bid $60.
