Al Dark Signed ONL Coleman Baseball with “1948 R.O.Y” Addition.

Lot 215. Al Dark Signed ONL Coleman Baseball with “1948 R.O.Y” Addition. Dark was the second winner of baseball’s Rookie of the Year award (Jackie Robinson was the first) and the last to be chosen as the best new player in all of Major League Baseball. Beginning in 1949, a top rookie was selected in each league. Few individuals who are not in the Hall of Fame had a more distinguished career than Dark. A .289 career batter, he was the first NL shortstop to hit 20 home runs more than once. When he retired, his .411 career slugging average was the seventh highest among NL shortstops, and only Ernie Banks and Travis Jackson had hit more home runs. He also was seventh in double plays and tenth in fielding average. After retiring, he won pennants in the NL and AL as a manager; only two other managers did so before him. He likely would have put up better career numbers if his major league debut had not been delayed by his service is World War II. Dark’s signature is nm-m 8 to mint 9 on the sweet spot. The ball is nm to nm-m with slight discoloration in the stitches above “Al.” Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
