Lot 159. 52 Books on the Yankees – Histories, Ruth, Mantle, Gehrig Biographies, Etc. Hardbacks unless otherwise indicated. Nine histories or record books complement the biographies and autobiographies, which dominate this collection. Sparky Lyle’s The Bronx Zoo leads the list of hardbacks; 1979, ex-m+ book and dj. Other hardbacks cover the Sixty-one season (Tony Kubek, 1967 assumed first edition, water damaged), the Yankee-Boston rivalry (Harvey Frommer, 1982, stated first edition), nm book and ex-m dj, the 1920s-50s (Frank Graham Jr., 1981), ex/ex, and Yankee Stadium (Joseph Durso, 1972, water damage). The DiMaggio hardbacks, excluding the ex-library copy, average nm in ex-m djs, while the paperbacks average ex. Casey Stengel is the author of one book and the subject of five others. Casey at the Bat: The Story of My Life, 1962, vg+/vg, highlights the Stengel collection, which includes biographies by Creamer, Durso, Allen, Gene Schoor and Ira Berkow (ex-library). Among the other (auto)biographies is Yankee Batboy by Joe Carrieri, 1955, vg+/vg and books written by Irwin Stambler, Schoor, Allen, Peter Golenbock and Milton Shapiro. Players covered are Whitey Ford, Billy Martin, Bob Turley and Catfish Hunter. Two of these books are missing dust jackets; overall, the books grade ex, and the djs, vg-ex. Many of the books have a Ruth 20-cent cent and first day of issue cancellation inside. The Meany book on Ruth is autographed by Detroit football star Andy Farkas. Proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit the Society for American Baseball Research, a non-profit membership organization open to all that fosters the research, preservation, and dissemination of the history and record of baseball.
