Lot 39. 1955-57 New York Yankees Picture Pack of 12 – Mantle, Envelope. SCD’s Standard Catalog considers this to be a 1955-57 issue similar to the Jay Publishing photo packs, while Beckett lists it as a 1956 Jay Publishing product. The players are Bauer, Berra, Byrne, Carey, Collins, Ford, Howard, Mantle, Martin, McDougald, Stengel and Turley. Nice nm to nm+ set. The Byrne card has eight printing marks of various sizes, and the Mantle has a very light 1/8” x ¼” stain in the lower border. The original envelope is vg to vg+.

Lot 123. Roger Maris: A Man for All Seasons Signed by His Son, Roger Maris, Jr. Maury Allen, New York Post sportswriter, wrote this 272-page 1986 biography. An apparent first edition, the book is nm in an nm dust jacket. Maris’ son signed the flyleaf with a large, bold 10 autograph. Above, he wrote, “Stay as sweet as you are.” Amid controversy, hostility and a threatened asterisk, Maris eclipsed Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record with 61 in 1961. Almost half a century later, his feat apparently remains unsurpassed without chemical enhancements. Of course, the record books show that Maris’ record fell in 1998, 37 years after he established it; Ruth’s record stood for 34 years. Maris passed away in 1985 at the age of 51. Lot 124. Magazine Photo Signed by Red Rolfe, New York Yankees All-Star Third Baseman. Rolfe made the All-Star team from 1937-39, played in six World Series, batted .289 over his career and was named the Yankees’ all-time third baseman in 1969, the year he passed away. He was athletic director at Dartmouth from 1954-67. Rolfe signed a 2” x 2 ½” magazine photo. His signature grades mint 9. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 127. David Wells Autographed Baseball, Perfect Game Ticket Stub and Display. Wells’ signature is a mint 9 on the sweet spot of an OAL Budig baseball. The ticket stub, which is ex, is framed to about 15” x 21” with a May 18, 1998 Newsday color page that celebrates Wells’ perfect game. Facing the Minnesota Twins the day before, Wells had pitched the 13th perfect game in baseball history. Wells was already 34-years old before he found real success with the New York Yankees in 1997. Lot 145. 1937 Type 1 World Series Wire Photo of Lefty Gomez. The 6 ½” x 8 ½” photo captures the New York Yankees star ready to hurl a pitch toward an unidentified, likely hapless New York Giants batter. Gomez was the Series’ top performer as he won Game 1, the source of this photo, 8-1, and then returned to wrap up the Series in Game 5, 4-2. The photo from International News Photos is vg with excellent contrast, a corner crease, a number of light creases and some “waves” from the caption attached to the back.

Lot 152. Wonderful Yankee Stadium 1940 “Baseball Championship” Full Ticket. None of New York’s major league teams made it to the 1940 World Series, but Yankee Stadium hosted a championship game nevertheless. On Sunday, Sept. 15, the New York Department of Sanitation took on the city’s Police Department in a benefit for the Sanitation Department’s Welfare Fund. Ex red, blue and gray ticket shows a policeman batting and a Colonial America figure serving as the umpire. The ticket measures about 2 ¾” x 6 ¾”.

Both the hardback and softcover versions of The Babe Ruth Story are present. “As told to Bob Considine,” the 1948 book is promoted as “My only Authorized Story.” The hardcover is a g+ to vg ex-library copy with the g-vg cover in Mylar adhered to the book. The 96-page softcover, a stated first edition, is vg-ex with a small stain and scuff and minor creases on the cover and clean vg+ to ex pages except for tape marks on the first title page. The Real Babe Ruth by Dan Daniel, 1963 second edition, is a 162-page nm-m extensively illustrated softcover that has been hardbound between orange boards.
