Lot 161. 1916 Detroit Free Press Featuring the World Series Red Sox with Ruth and Dodgers. And University of Michigan football too! A huge two-page 21 ½” x 32 ½” spread from the newspaper’s Oct. 15 Rotogravure Supplement presents vignette sepia photos of players for Brooklyn’s Trolly Dodgers and the Boston Red Sox. Among the 25 Red Sox pictured are pitcher Babe Ruth and right fielder Harry Hooper. The Dodgers’ cast of 17 includes manager Wilbert Robinson, right fielder Casey Stengel, left Fielder Zach Wheat and pitcher Rube Marquard. Boston captured the World Championship in five games. The two-page spread was folded once vertically and once horizontally, and there are edge tears along the horizontal fold and several additional tears originating along the edges. Professionally matted and framed, the spread would serve as an outstanding display. On the back of one page is a 5” x 15” photo of the 1916 Michigan football team, which posted a 7-2 record under coach Fielding Yost, who is not pictured. A separate photo shows the team’s 1914 captain and All-American, John Maulbetsch.
