Baseball Photography   5 Lots

Lot 142.  Unusual Assortment of 7 1875 to 1920s-30s Baseball Photos Including Stereoviews. A circa 1880s 3 ½” x 6” cabinet sepia photo captures a posed pitcher who wears quilted pants and uses a “workman”-style glove, vg photo with moderate contrast, corner-clipped mount. Both stereoviews are sepia. One from 1875 shows two groups of baseball players in what appears to be a school picture in Mt. Windsor, ME. The 4” x 7” stereoview is by W. C. Tuttle, Photographer, of Belfast, ME. The photos, which show some evidence of rubbing, exhibit strong contrast. The card was folded vertically between the two photos. The other stereoview, 3 ½” x 7”, shows game action in the distance with fans in the foreground, vg. The newest and largest photo represents an interesting piece of U.S. history. Measuring 10 ¾” x 13”, it pictures 20 players and two men in suits from the U.S. Emergency Shipping Board Fleet Corp., a 1917-36 federal corporation that was superseded by the U..S. Maritime Commission. Great-looking photo that has a chipped corner, a crease at the right and two punches (no paper missing) in the player at the left. There is a number on each person in the photo; the identifications are absent. Also, two 4” x 5” cabinet photos, vg with light contrast, an individual player and a team, and a 5” x 13 ¾” panoramic photo of a game in progress at a picnic, composed of two photos that show nice contrast. The panorama has significant damage at the top and at the far left, most of which could be matted out.
Minimum Bid $100.

Lot 143.  6 Photos of 1889 National League or American Association Baseball Teams. Each 5” x 7 ¼” photo is on a 6 ½” x 9” book plate page from the 1889 book Athletic Sports in America, England and Australia by Harry Clay and others. The book is very scarce and typically sells for $500 or more. Teams pictured in this collection are Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Washington of the National League and Cincinnati, Columbus and Louisville of the American Association. The photos are ex-m to nm, and four of the pages are ex or better. Two have border damage. Although the players in each photo are not identified, these teams included such players as Billy Sunday, Jack Glasscock, Dummy Hoy and Pete Browning.
Winning Bid $92.

Lot 144.  Circa 1900 Photo of a New York Athletic Club Baseball Team. The sepia 6 ¼” x 9” photo captures members of the “Lobster Bowling Team” baseball team. One member holds a bat. Established in 1892, the “Lobster” group was an affiliate or subsidiary of the Athletic Club. Ex-m photo exhibiting excellent contrast on a troubled 8” x 10” mount. Great photo representing an interesting slice of New York City baseball history.
Winning Bid $75.

Lot 145.  1937 Type 1 World Series Wire Photo of Lefty Gomez. The 6 ½” x 8 ½” photo captures the New York Yankees star ready to hurl a pitch toward an unidentified, likely hapless New York Giants batter. Gomez was the Series’ top performer as he won Game 1, the source of this photo, 8-1, and then returned to wrap up the Series in Game 5, 4-2. The photo from International News Photos is vg with excellent contrast, a corner crease, a number of light creases and some “waves” from the caption attached to the back.
Winning Bid $40.

Lot 146.  Mel Ott Outstanding Type 1 Wide World Photos 1937 W.S.-Related Wire Photo. Sharply focused with superb contrast, this 6” x 8” photo shows Ott four days before the beginning of the Giants-Yankees World Series. The photo is missing the right border, and it has a crease to Ott’s left and some “waves” along the left and right borders. The caption is on the back, which carries the Wide World stamp. Tremendous image of the Hall of Fame right fielder, one of the most popular Giants ever.
Winning Bid $102.
