In a career that spanned 1916-34 with the Chicago American Giants, Malarcher established himself as a clutch hitter, one of baseball’s best third basemen and one of the top managers in the Negro Leagues. Intelligent and educated, he became a successful real estate broker and an accomplished poet after his baseball career ended. He published three book-length poems, including a tribute to his wife following her death in 1946. Malarcher died in 1982. His signature, “David J. Malarcher,” is a gem mint 10 on a lined index card. Lot 122.  Cincinnati 3-No-Hit Hurler Jim Maloney on an ONL William White Baseball. Winning Bid $68.

Lot 123.  Roger Maris: A Man for All Seasons Signed by His Son, Roger Maris, Jr. Maury Allen, New York Post sportswriter, wrote this 272-page 1986 biography. An apparent first edition, the book is nm in an nm dust jacket. Maris’ son signed the flyleaf with a large, bold 10 autograph. Above, he wrote, “Stay as sweet as you are.” Amid controversy, hostility and a threatened asterisk, Maris eclipsed Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record with 61 in 1961. Almost half a century later, his feat apparently remains unsurpassed without chemical enhancements. Of course, the record books show that Maris’ record fell in 1998, 37 years after he established it; Ruth’s record stood for 34 years. Maris passed away in 1985 at the age of 51. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Minimum Bid $20.

Lot 124.  Magazine Photo Signed by Red Rolfe, New York Yankees All-Star Third Baseman. Leading off the eighth inning of Game 7 between the Cardinals and Red Sox, Slaughter singled, and then went all the way from first to home on a single to center by Harry Walker. His “Mad Dash” is one of the most memorable moments in World Series history. The 11” x 14” nm-m sepia photo shows Slaughter sliding home as Boston catcher Roy Partee goes up the third base line to grab the relay throw from Johnny Pesky. Marty Marion is on deck, and umpire Al Barlick is shown. Slaughter’s signature is a gem mint 10. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $30.

Lot 126.  Book Signed by Arch Ward – Father of the All-Star Game and Rockne PR Guy. Ward autographed the title page of the 1951 softcover The New Chicago White Sox. Focusing on the 1940s and 1950, the book provides an insightful history of the ChiSox. Nevertheless, Ward himself may be more interesting than the book. Sports editor of the Chicago Tribune, he created Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game, the All-American Football Conference, the College All-Star Game and the Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament. He also is credited with being the first to handle publicity for Knute Rockne – when he was a student at Notre Dame. Ward’s autograph is a fountain pen mint 9 to gem mint 10 on the title page of the book, which is an apparent first edition, vg-ex and contains many photos. Ward was only 58 when he passed away in 1955. Scarce book that is extremely scarce with Ward’s autograph. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $77.
