Pittsburgh Pirates   8 Lots

Lot 115.  Lloyd Waner Signed 1979 Dexter Press Hall of Fame Plaque Postcard. Gem mint 10 signature on an ex+ postcard. Excellent defensively, Waner was a speedster who seldom struck out. A .316 career batter, he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1967. He passed away in 1982. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $30.

Lot 162.  Impressive 1954-54 Pittsburgh Area “Honus Wagner” Basketball Trophy. This 15 ½” trophy, named the “Honus Wagner Trophy,” was awarded to the Oakland (a section of Pittsburgh) Y.M.C.A. team as champions of the Keystone Basketball League. The trophy consists of 4 5/8” plastic base, a 5 5/8” column and a 4 ¾” brass figural basketball player. A brass engraved 2 ¾” x 4 ¾” plate provides the information on the trophy and the team. Ex-m.
Minimum Bid $40.

Lot 163.  Pittsburgh Pirates 1955 Yearbook with Rookie Outfielder Roberto Clemente. Yearbook copy tends to suffer from unwarranted hype, but whoever wrote this about Clemente got it right: “The Pirates drafted him as No. 1 choice in the annual lottery, and may have picked up a real prize. Only 20, he has everything but experience, and his success in the majors appears only a question of time.” Clemente shares page 20 of the 48-page yearbook with Preston Ward. Vg cover with a 1 ¼” tear on the back, and ex pages. The back page has an ad for Topps’ 1955 baseball cards. One of the less common Pirates yearbooks.
Winning Bid $55.

Lot 164.  Teenie Harris Signed 11” x 14” B&W Photo of Roberto Clemente and Dick Groat. From 1936-75, Harris was a photographer for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of the largest African-American newspapers in the county. His 80,000+ photos included many Pittsburgh sports figures. This photo is ex-m with some minor creases along the edges or in the corners. Harris’ signature is a 10, and the images of the two Pirates greats are outstanding!
Winning Bid $102.

Lot 165.  1976 Pittsburgh Sign Honoring Roberto Clemente. This 11” x 28” sign, which was displayed on buses in the Pittsburgh area, features four dramatic images of “The Great One.” Sponsored, in part, by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the gold, black and white sign contains the poetry of Tom Clark: “won’t forget his nervous habit of rearing his head back and his neck like a proud horse.” The poem is presented in both English and Spanish. One unusual image on the sign shows a playful Clemente. The sign is vg with multiple pin holes in each corner and inoffensive creases.
Winning Bid $40.

Lot 166.  Complete Ticket for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ First Game at Three Rivers Stadium. The Pirates inaugurated the stadium on July 16, 1970, by losing to Cincinnati, 3-2. Nm full ticket for a box seat stamped “Souvenir” on the back.
Winning Bid $30.

Lot 167.  Pittsburgh Pirates 1971 Arco Near Set, IDL Cards, Plus Groat, Iron City Specials. The earliest and perhaps most interesting item in this group is a 5 ½” x 8” b&w premium of Dick Groat handed out on April 17, 1961, at the now-defunct Joseph Horne Co. store in Pittsburgh. Groat was there to promote his book The World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates. Printed on thin paper; vg appearance. There also are four uncommon b&w photos, two each of Richie Hebner and Bruce Kison. The Hebner photos, given away at “Iron City Father Son Night,” grade ex-m and vg. One Kison photo is ex+, and the other is g; they were handed out at “Iron City Family Sports Night.” The 1963 IDL cards are of Francis and McBean. Both are vg. Hebner is missing from the 1971 Arco issue. The 11 cards present all have multiple pin holes in the center at the top. They display nicely. Without the pin holes considered, Clemente is vg, and Stargell vg-ex. The others range from g to ex and average vg to vg-ex. 18 items.
Winning Bid $45.

Lot 173.  Pittsburgh Pirates 1960 and 1970 Photo Pennants + an N.L. Centennial Pennant. All are full-sized. The color photo on the 1960 pennant displays as ex-m with a light crease. The pennant has a stain extending as much as 10” from the tip. Vg+ to ex, sharp tip, no pin holes. The 1970 pennant is vg to vg-ex with two heavy vertical creases on the photo. The N.L. Centennial pennant is vg-ex with several tack holes. These pennants all display decently.
Winning Bid $75.
