Lot 192. 5 Vintage Collectibles Related to Tobacco Premiums. The earliest and most desirable of the items is a printed document dated Jan. 10, 1902, from the C. Hy. Brown company of St. Louis. In the document, titled “Sweet Caporal Cigarette Box Fronts,” Brown notes that it has made arrangements with the American Tobacco Co. to redeem “box-fronts and labels” and with the Continental Tobacco Co., to accept “tags” from various brands. During the early 1900s, Brown extensively advertised in newspapers a “Catalog of Presents” that were “Free for Tobacco Tags.” This historically interesting notice is 6 ½” x 9” and has two large and a couple of smaller tears and some edge chips. All text is present and fully readable. Accompanying this document are four redemption “Certificates” from the United Cigar Stores Company of America. Established in 1901, United once had the largest chain of cigar stores in the U.S. It filed for bankruptcy in 1932, recovered and then was merged into other firms in the 1960s.
