Baseball Autographs   51 Lots       »

Lot 90.  3 Signed Photos Capturing Some of Baseball’s Most Dramatic Moments. This group comprises sepia 8” x10” photos autographed by the participants in three of baseball’s most famous events. (Note: Some fans, depending on their team, may view these events as infamous instead.) The autographs are all bold gem mint 10s. In Game 4 of the 1941 World Series, Brooklyn catcher Mickey Owen, a usually reliable All-Star, allowed what should have been a game-ending third strike to get past him. Before Owen could retrieve the ball, Yankees batter Tom Henrich was safe at first. The Yankees rallied to win the game and then captured the series in five games the next day. Owen and Henrich both signed a photo capturing the moment. In 1946 World Series Game 7, Enos Slaughter made his successful “Mad Dash” from first to home on a single to score the run that gave St. Louis the series over Boston. Slaughter signed a photo that shows him sliding home as Roy Partel goes after Johnny Pesky’s throw as the Cardinals Marty Marion looks on. Partel and Marion also signed. The third photo pictures the Giants’ Bobby Thomson just after connecting for the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” off Ralph Branca in the game that settled the 1951 N.L. pennant race. The photo has the signatures of both men. Wonderful collection for a game room or sports bar! LoA from James Spence. Authenticated also by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $168.

Lot 91.  1949 Senators Team-Signed Pennsylvania Railroad Dining Car Menu. Twenty-two members of the Washington team signed the back of the menu in pencil. Their signatures are bold, 9s and 10s: Rick Ferrell, Mark Christman, Joe Haynes, Mickey Harris, Ray Scarborough, Sam Mele, Ed Yost, Paul Calvert, Jake Early, Sid Hudson, Doc Lentz, Dick Welteroth, Lloyd Hittle, Gil Coan, Clyde Vollmer, Al Kozar, Sam Dente, Dick Weik, Sherry Robertson, Edward Robinson, Joe Kuhel and Allen Gettel. Great baseball and railroad collectible! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 94.  Steve Carlton Signed 11” x 14” Photo, 1997 Perez-Steele “Great Moments” Card. Both autographs are gem mint 10s. The card is nm-m, and the color photo is ex-m with light corner creases. If Carlton wasn’t baseball’s best left-handed pitcher ever, few others have a stronger case. Among lefties, only Warren Sphan won more games than Carlton, and only right-hander Nolan Ryan struck out more batters. In addition, he won four N.L. Cy Young Awards even though he was not well liked among the writers who made the selection. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility in 1994. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $40.

His signature grades 9-10 of 10 on a 2 ½” x 2 ¾” newspaper photo. Dickey passed away in 1993. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 97.  2 1953 Checks Signed by Bill Dickey. Early checks, both signed on July 20 by the New York Yankees Hall of Fame catcher. Both signatures are bold. One is slightly affected by cancellation punches. The other has smudges on “W” and “ck.” On the second check, Dickey listed “Yankee Stadium N.Y.C.” as the address. Dickey checks are relatively scarce, and very few this early have surfaced. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.

His autograph is mint 9 on the cover, which is vg+ to ex and detached from the ex-m pages. A member of the 500 Home Run Club, Mathews is an underappreciated member of the Hall of Fame.
