Lot 161. Jesse Owens Signed Photo in a 1970 Dinner Program. Owens was one of the greatest track and field stars in U.S. history. In 1960, U.S. sportswriters selected him as the “Champion of the Century.” During his career, he broke 11 world track and field records. At the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, he embarrassed Adolph Hitler by winning four gold medals, in the 100-meters, 200-meters, broad jump and relay. Hitler refused to present the gold medals to Owens. After World War II, he returned to the site of the Berlin Olympics and received a standing ovation from a crowd of 75,000 as he jogged around the track. Owens passed away in 1980. He signed his 4 ½” x 6 ½” image in a 1970 awards program for the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference. His signature is mint 9 and personalized to “Chris.” He added “My Best Always” above his signature.
