Lot 171.  1914 Player “Victoria Cross” Set of 25 Recognizing Recipients of the Honor. The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration awarded for valor in the face of the enemy to members of the British armed forces. On the back, these color cards describe the act of heroism that earned the award, and on the front, artwork depicts the act. Six cards are ex with the remaining cards evenly split between g-vg to vg-ex

Lot 172.  18 1920s Strip Cards Including Chaplin, Mix, Barrymore, Talmadge, Will Rogers. Seven cards are from the 1926-27 W512 set: #11 Irene Rich p, 20 Corrine Griffith (married George Preston Marshall) f-g, 21 Mix p, 24 Chaplin (3) all p and 25 John Barrymore g. Seven more are from an unnumbered color set that lists the stars name and typically has two more lines of information: Doris Kenyon p, Chas. Murray (2) both f, Will Rogers f-g, Blanche Sweet (2) one f and the other p, and Norma Talmadge p. Three more are from an unnumbered color set featuring historical figures: William Clark (Lewis & Clark) p-f and Simon Kenton (2) both f.

Lot 174.  90+ Cards Presenting British Royalty. More than 60 cards are from three sets, 11 different from Carreras’ 1925 “Regalia” set (larger size) of 20, 40 (17 different) from the 1935 Player “The Reign of King George V” set and 11 (five different) from the 1937 Wills “Our King & Queen” set. The other cards are associated with King Edward VII (7 cards, 6 diff.), Queen Alexandra (3, 2 diff.), King George V (4 diff.), Queen Mary (8 diff.), King George VI (10, 6 diff), Queen Elizabeth (1925 card) and Princess Elizabeth with Princess Margaret Rose. These additional cards are primarily 1930s issues from Ardath, Churchman, Kensitas, Lambert & Butler, Ogden’s, Player and Phillips. About 80% of the cards are ex or better. The remaining 20% are vg-ex or less.

Lot 175.  1926 Hill “Historic Places from Dickens’ Classics” Set of 50. This is the larger 2 5/8” x 3 ¼” version. The cards have color fronts and informational backs. The set includes a portrait of Dickens, places where Dickens lived and buildings that were immortalized in his stories. Nm overall.

Lot 176.  1926-27 W512 Card of #25 John Barrymore, 1928 W513 of # 51 Charles Lindbergh. The Barrymore card is 1 13/32” x 2 3/8” and vg-ex (looks better), while the Lindbergh is 1 3/8” x 2 ¼”, trimmed somewhat irregularly on the right side and otherwise ex and free of creases.

Lot 177.  55+ 1930s Cards of Actors and Actresses. This collection includes a number of duplicates. The actresses (27) are Constance Bennett (2), Betty Bronson, Evelyn Brent, Claudette Colbert (3 different), Irene Dunne, Kay Francis, Myrna Loy (6, two of each), Pia Negri, Eleanor Powell (2), Rosalind Russell (2), Norma Scherer (4 diff.), Margaret Sullivan, Norma Talmadge and Jane Wyatt. The actors (30) are Fred Astaire, George Brent, Maurice Chevalier (2), Gary Cooper (3, two different), Sir Cedric Hardwicke (3 diff.), Allan Jones (5), Ray Milland, Sir Laurence Olivier, Dick Powell, George Raft (6), Randolph Scott (2), Robert Taylor, Franchet Tone (2) and Victor Varconi. All but two of these cards have color fronts. Seventeen show two actors. The sets are from Ardath, Carreras, Gallaher, Player, Phillips and Wills. The cards are 1930s except for a few from the Wills 1928 “Cinema Stars” set. Cards are generally vg to vg-ex with some in better and others in lesser condition.

World Leaders – 10 cards are from eight sets, 1899-1937. 1899 Ogden #22, Prime Minister Gladstone, vg-ex. 1917 Wills Nicholas II, vg-ex. 1925 Player Peter the Great, ex-m. 1927 Carreras G. B. School Emblems – partial large set, 18 different of 40 from Carreras (Black Cat) 1929. Vg-ex to ex. Also, one small card vg. 4. British Royalty – 35 cards, eight from the 1925 Carreras “Regalia” set, three from the 1935 “Kings and Queens of England” set, five from the 1935 Ardath “Silver Jubliee” set and 16 from the 1935 “The Reign of King George V” set plus four others. About two-thirds of the cards are ex or better; the others are vg or less. 5. Military – including three 1927 or 1933 Amalgamated Press Triumph magazine cards showing Canadian or British battles (1 ex, 1 vg-ex and 1 vg). Also, two 1937 Cope’s “The World’s Police,” both ex, and a set of 24 1991 “British Regiments” cards, nm to nm-m. 6. Prehistoric Animals – 12 from the 1963 Brooke Bond 1963 “Dinosaurs” issue. Tape residue on the back; otherwise nm-m. Also, eight from the 1972 “Prehistoric Animals” set, vg to vg-ex overall. 7. Movies – an extra large card of Cary Grant and Joan Bennett from Ardath’s 1936 “From Screen and Stage.” G. 8. Sports – including a 1979 “Olympics Great” card of Jesse Owens nm-m, a 1939 Churchman “Kings of Speed” S. H. Ferris card g, six modern wrestling cards nm-m and two uncut sheets of uncatalgoed 1993 Canadian Post Toronto Blue Jays “Victory Seals” with Paul Molitor and Joe Carter, both nm-m.

Lot 179.  2 Sets of Bird Cards: 1935 Challis “Wild Birds at Home” Plus a 1970 Set. Gowers & Burgons Tea produced the 1970 set, “British Birds and Their Nests.” Both sets show bird nests. In the 36-card “Wild Birds at Home” set, 19 of the cards show only the nest and eggs of such birds as the great crested grebe, mallard and reed warbler. For most of the cards, the bird or nest is in black & white, while the background is in a green tone. These cards use photos, while the 25-card GB 1970 set of 25 relies on drawings, all depicting the bird and nest. The 1935 cards are 1 1/2” x 2 ½”, and the 1970 cards, about 1 3/8” x 2 1/8”; both have informational backs and both are nm to nm-m.

Lot 181.  3 Airplane Sets Including Player’s 1936 “International Airlines” Set of 50. With color fronts and informational backs, these 50 cards provide an excellent overview of commercial aviation in the mid-1930s. Ex to ex-m overall. The other sets are: Player’s (Doncella) 1977 “Golden Age of Flying” set of 24, nm to nm-m, and the 1995 Sanitarium Health Food “Aviation Card” set of 20, nm to nm-m.

Lot 182.  16 Different 1940s V400 Brownie Chocolate Products “Airplanes” Cards. These 16 cards, which measure 2 ½” x 3 1/8”, constitute one-half of the set. They have b&w fronts and informative backs. Among the planes are the Bell Aircobra, the Boeing B-17B Bomber and the Hawker Hurricane Fighter. Card numbers are 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12, 16, 24-28 and 30-32. Ex-m overall with some in better and others in lesser condition.

Lot 183.  Scarce Circa 1940 Premium of Actress Priscilla Lane, Dixie Lid Bob Hope, Etc. The color 8” x 10” premium is from Auto-Lite Spark Plugs, vg-ex with a tack hole at the top. Lane was a major star for Warner Bros. from the mid-1930s to mid-1940s. Her credits include Brother Rat (1938), The Roaring Twenties opposite James Cagney (1939) and Arsenic and Old Lace (1944). The Dixie lids, all but one with Hoodsie backs, are: 1940: Irene Dunne (3) and Tyrone Power, Johnny Apollo. 1942, The Range Busters, Thunder River Feud. 1952, Bob Hope, Son of Paleface. All have a crease at the tab and otherwise are generally free of creases. All have some degree of foxing or staining. This condition is relatively light on Hope and one of the Dunne lids.

Lot 184.  Circa 1941 C271A Sweet Caporal (Canadian) “Aircraft ‘Spotter’ Series” Cards. Cut from packages, these cards are all different and measure about 3” x 3 ½”. Thirty-five cards are numbered; there also is an unnumbered “tail markings” card. Cards are numbered from 1-55. All of the cards have some damage to their blank backs. The grades indicate the appearance of the fronts. Ex: 1 card. Vg-ex: 8. Vg: 12. G-vg: 3. G: 6. F-g: 1. F: 1. P-f: 1. P: 3.

Lot 185.  30 1941 Exhibit Supply Company Licenses, Permits and Certificates. From an apparent set of 40, these humorous cards contain “documents” permitting such activities as driving on the wrong side of the street, kissing, lying, eating pie and snooping; 28 different. Vg-ex to ex overall.
