Lot 125.  1941 Yankees at Dodgers World Series Program Scored for Game 4. The Yankees won this game, 7-4, and captured the series the next day. The 36-page program has photos and brief biographical sketches of each player. A section of the program cover in the upper left is missing; it once held an autograph of Babe Ruth. The front cover also has various scuffs and tears. Both covers are largely detached; the back cover and the last page of the program are stained. Otherwise, the inside pages are complete and vg to vg-ex with the scorecard portion neatly scored in pencil. The program is well worth our

Lot 126.  1943 All-Star War Bond Game Program Featuring Yankees, Dodgers and Giants. Sixty-four page program for a game at the Polo Grounds between the Baseball War Bond League All-Stars, consisting of players from the three New York teams, and the Camp Cumberland All-Service Team, including such stars as Hank Greenberg and Enos Slaughter. Sponsored by the New York Journal American in cooperation with the U.S. Treasury, the game was part of a promotion that resulted in the sale of more than $1 billion in War Bonds. The scorecard is absent from the program, and the covers are detached and have chips along the edges. The first eight pages are split 5” along the spine and have tears. The program pictures Mel Ott, Joe McCarthy and Leo Durocher, the three NY area managers, and such stars as Ernie Lombardi, Carl Hubbell, Charlie Keller, Bill Dickey, Arky Vaughan, Billy Herman and Dixie Walker. It also has a section on Hall of Fame members that includes the box score for the first major league game played by Mack, Eddie Collins, Wagner, Speaker, Johnson, Sisler and Ruth. Scarce.

Lot 127.  1953 Brooklyn Dodgers at NY Yankees World Series Program Scored for Game 6. It wasn’t as emphatic as Bill Mazeroski’s ninth-inning series-winning home run seven years later, but Billy Martin’s ninth-inning series-winning single was dramatic enough. It sent Hank Bauer home to give the Yankees their fifth World Championship in five years. Martin was the batting star of the series, hittng .500 with 12 hits and eight runs batted in. The 48-page program features photos and profiles of players from both teams. Vg+ with a tiny chip out of the front cover, a ¼” tear and corner chip on the back cover, and light stains at the top of the pages.

Lot 128.  3 Baltimore Orioles Yearbooks Including the 1962 Oversized Issue. Size apparently mattered in the production of yearbooks in the early 1960s for some major league teams, including the Orioles. At 17” wide x 11”, the 1962 yearbook has the appearance of a calendar. This copy is complete with the staples removed and is vg to vg-ex. Standard-size yearbooks for 1973 and 1984 are nm.

Lot 129.  NY Mets Inaugural Season Ticket Promo Plus Programs, Yearbook. The promo, 11” x 17” when opened, declares that “The National League is Back to Stay!” It has a drawing of Flushing Stadium and pictures manager Casey Stengel and stars of the N.L., including Aaron, Snider, Mathews, Mays, Clemente and Drysdale. Ex in the original mailing envelope, which has “Flushing Meadows Stadium, New 1963 Home of the New York Mets” on one side and Stengel on the other. The five programs are all scored: 1963 vs. Phils, ex. 1964 vs. Pirates, World’s Fair edition, ex. 1965 vs. Pirates, ex-m. 1966 vs. Dodgers, ex. 1968 vs. Phils, Seaver, Koosman and Hodges pictured, final MLB standings taped inside, otherwise vg+, lower right corner chipped. Also, 1970 yearbook, 64 pages, many celebrating the Mets’ 1960 World Championship, ex-m, tiny corner chip. Includes color photos of Ryan, Seaver and Hodges. Seven collectibles.

Lot 130.  1965 Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants Program. Vg-ex program that has a tiny split at the bottom of the spine and is partially scored for a game played Sept 11, 1965. The 34-page program pictures Mays, Marichal and other players and has an ad for bobbin’ head dolls, including Mays.

Lot 131.  Three Rivers Stadium 1970 “Souvenir Book.” The Pittsburgh Pirates prepared this 104-page program-format publication to mark the opening of Three Rivers Stadium. It provides information on the construction of the stadium, Pirates history, photos of 1970 players and features on Roberto Clemente, Honus Wagner and the Waner brothers. Nice ex-m copy.

Lot 132.  Program, Fotoball from the 1996 Mets-Padres “La Primera Serie” in Mexico. This series was a first for Major League Baseball! It was first played outside the U.S. or Canada to count in the standings. Playing in Monterrey, Mexico, the San Diego Padres took two out of three games from the New York Mets. The 32-page program in Spanish is nm, and the Fotoball with the series logo is nm-m. Fernando Valenzuela is on the program cover with the Padres’ Larry Lucchino and John Moores. Inside, there is a three-page article on Valenzuela. Players from each team are pictured. Interesting memorabilia for a groundbreaking event!

Lot 133.  1869 Harper’s Woodcut, 1884 Baseball Results, 1907 Sporting Life Issue. The centerpiece of this excellent collection of early newspapers is a page from the July 24, 1869 Harper’s Weekly with a one-half-page print of the “Presentation of a (27-foot-long) champion bat to the ‘Red Stocking’ Base-Ball Club, Cincinnati, Ohio, on its return home.” It displays as ex-m with a light corner crease. Two 1884 issues of The Indianapolis Gazette report baseball results. The Indianapolis Blues were the city’s entry in the American Association. The pages are separated along the spine and vg. The Feb. 16, 1907 edition of Sporting Life has a composite of the Buffalo team of the Eastern League on the cover, f-g. The July 17, 1915 issue is vg with two punch holes at the top. Articles cover player-manager Joseph Birmingham’s suit against the Cleveland Indians and Benny Kauff’s suspension by Brooklyn of the Federal League.

Lot 134.  6 Copies of Baseball Magazine, 1944-52, with Star Covers. Actually, President Grover Cleveland is the cover star of the earliest issue, from June 1944. Cleveland is pictured on a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. A crowd scene from Yankee Stadium is in the background. MLB actively promoted the sale of bonds to support the World War II effort. Vg-ex. 2. Dec. 1947, cover photo with Jackie Robinson being caught in a rundown by Bill Johnson, Frank Shea and Phil Rizzuto of the Yankees in Game 1 of the 1947 World Series. Team photos of the World Series competitors are on the inside covers. Vg. 3. June 1948, President Harry Truman throws out the first ball at the season-opening game between the Senators and Yankees. Clark Griffith and Bucky Harris are in the photo. New stand mark on the cover, vg-ex. 4. Sept. 1948, outstanding cover photo of a young Stan Musial. There is a tear on the right edge toward the bottom, and a ½” tear in the same position on all the pages. 5. Sept. 1952, Babe Ruth, several images including one with Lou Gehrig, vg+ with a couple of news stand notations. Inside the back cover is a photo of Carl Erskine pitching his no-hit, nearly perfect game against the Cubs. 6. June 1952, Willie Mays, Johnny Mize, Casey Stengel and others, vg+ to ex, news stand notation. The pages in three of the last four issues are generally ex or better.
