Lot 119. 1926 Lambert & Butler “Who’s Who in Sport (1926)” Partial Set with Tunney. Issued in New Zealand, this set comprises real sepia photos of men and women star athletes on the front and a brief summary of their accomplishments on the back. Thirty-three of 50 cards are present. Among the stars are heavyweight champion Gene Tunney nm+, golfers Aubrey Boomer vg-ex and two English Ladies title winners, Cecil Leitch nm and Molly Gourlay vg, Wimbledon champions Kitty McKane Godfree vg, Jean Borotra ex-m and Suzanne Lenglen nm+, auto racing champ H. O. D. Segrave nm+, and Gertrude Ederle, an American and the first woman to swim the English Channel g-vg. Cards present are #1, 3, 4, 6-8, 10-12, 14, 15, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 32-34, 36-41, 43-48 and 50. Slightly more than half of the cards not graded above are g to vg-ex. Most of the rest are ex to ex-m, with a few ex-m+ to nm+.

Lot 120. 14 Cards Representing the Olympics, Soccer, Rugby, Lacrosse, Boxing, Golf, Etc. The oldest card, which shows a lacrosse game, is from the 1917 Wills “Sports of the World” set. It has a Village Maid back, vg. Other older cards include: 1926 Ogden’s “Famous Rugby Players,” J. W. Brough, ex. 1930 Drapkin “Sporting Celebrities in Action,” D. Love, quarter miler, vg-ex. 1930 Mitchell, “Old Sporting Prints,” J. Goodman, ex-m. Churchman 1938 “Association Footballers,” H. Betmead, vg, and 1939 “Kings of Speed,” W. L. Fiske, ex. Harry Vardon, who won the British Open a record six times and the U.S. Open once, represents golf in a modern “Old Golfing Greats” postcard, vg-ex. Six cards are from the 1979 “Olympic Greats” set, John Kelly nm-m, Pat McCormick vg, Jesse Owens nm-m, Wilma Rudolph nm-m, Mark Spitz ex-m+ and Johnny Weissmuller vg-ex. Also, a B.D.V. Cigarettes card that shows boxer “Bonnie” Muir on one side and sculler Major Goodsell on the other. Ex+.

Lot 121. 7 Sports 1940s-50s Wire and Other Photos – Rupp, Moran, Mathias, Fitzsimmons. Two photos are of Olympic decathlon champion Bob Mathias, one by UPI (two images, 6” x 9”) and the other by Acme Telephoto (1949, receives sportsmanship award, 7” x 9”, vg-ex with peripheral creases, chips and tears). Horse trainer Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons is the subject of a 1953 UPI 7” x 9” photo with attached caption, vg+ to ex. Tennis player Gertrude “Gorgeous Gussie” Moran is shown shopping while holding a racquet in Paris in a 5” x 8” Acme photo with caption. Other photos are of Tom Harmon with Mickey Davies, 8” x 10”, LA photographer, ex; Adolph Rupp, 5” x 7”, U. of Kentucky photo, ex, and Frank Sedgman, who won U.S. and Wimbledon singles tennis championships, 4” x 5 ½”, probable wire photo, ex with crop marks. Lot 122. Uncommon 1955 British Automatic “Sportsman” Set of 24. These 1 1/8” x 2 1/8” color cards contain portraits of athletes from the world of boxing, billiards, golf, rugby, speedway racing, soccer, cricket, horse racing and other sports. Among the “names” are Denis Compton, Bleddyn Williams, Tom Finney, Trevor Bailey, Sir Gordon Richards, Don Cockell, Stirling Moss, Geoffrey Duke, Henry Cotton, Joe Davis and Rosalind and Diane Rowe. Lot 123. 1979 Brooke Bond “Olympic Greats” Set of 40 in the Original Album. The cards, which are held in the album with photo-type corner mounts, picture such stars as Jesse Owens, Nadia Comaneci, Muhammad Ali, Mark Spitz, Johnny Wesissmuller, Sonja Heine and Jean-Claude Killy. The cards average nm-m, and the album is ex with a tiny tear and small area of paper loss in the white background along the bottom edge of the front cover.

Lot 125. 12 Vintage Motorcycle Cards, 2 Modern Sets Featuring Vintage Bikes. The vintage cards are from three sets: 1929 Pattreiouex “Dirt Track Riders,” eight different, color fronts show riders on their cycles; descriptive backs. Riders are Chadwick ex+, Datson ex-m, Dallison vg-ex, Firth ex-m+, Bob Harrison vg-ex, Hazard vg-ex, Skinner vg-ex and Taft ex-m+. These cards “book” for $7 each. 1929 Ogden’s “Famous Dirt-Track Riders,” Sieffert vg-ex. 1930 Godfrey Phillips “Speed Champions,” four different, sepia fronts, backs describing various racing techniques. One nm, two ex-m+, one ex+. The sets, each with 24 cards, are from the Vintage Motor Cycle Club and Newmarket Hardware, “Some of Britain’s Finest Bikes.” These sets are about 3” x 2 ½” with color fronts and short descriptions on the back.
