Lot 167.  Mayo’s Cut Plug Tin Box, 38 19th Century Cards from at Least 6 Sets. The 7 ¾” x 3 ½” x 5” tin displays nicely with more than 90 percent of the paint present. “Mayo’s” is strong on three sides and damaged on one side panel. The cards are from: 1886 N16 Allen & Ginter’s “Natives in Costume,” Siam, p (extensive back damage, f front). N190 Kimball “Actresses,” Emma Juch, p (and we mean it = awmi). 1880s N224 “Military Series,” 24 different. All have back damage that affectsw text on the left and right sides; generally, the first and last word of each line is affected. The fronts grade: 1 ex-m, 2 ex, 1 vg+ to ex, 4 vg-ex, 3 vg, 2 g-vg, 1 g, 2 f-g, 3 f, 2 p-f, 2 p and 1 p (awmi). N228 Kinney Bros. “Novelties,” seven different representing three types. Three Type 2 have damaged backs with all type missing; one front is g, one f and one p. Three cards, apparently Type 5, have back damage that does not affect the type; one front is vg+ to ex, one p-f and one p. A die-cut bicycle with a woman in the center has light back damage away from the text, a light stain behind the text and an nn front. Late 1880s N375 “Breeds of Dogs,” Skye Terrier and Dalmatian. Both have extensive back damage; the fronts are vg+ to ex and g-vg, respectively. Also, three sepia real-photo cards from one or more sets. One appears to be an N369 Lone Jack "Actress" card trimmed to 2 3/16" top-to-bottom. The Lone Jack brand has been trimmed away, but "Ruby Cigarettes" is discernable behind the actress. The blank-backed card has a strong photo, ex corners and is free of creases. Another card without any identifier is also trimmed. The third card has light damage to the blank back, a vg-ex front, and the actress is Ruth Stetson.

Lot 169.  5 Cards of Ships Including a Very Scarce Wills 1905 “Warships” Card. Pre-1920 British cards generally carry a substantial premium, and there are two in this collection. Wills issued a series of 50 “Warship” cards in Australia in 1905. This example is the “H.M.S. Repulse,” a Royal Sovereign Class battleship that was in service from 1892-1911, vg-ex to ex. The second pre-1920 issue is from the 1915 Churchman “Silhouettes of Warships” set, Small German Cruiser, ex-m. Also: 1967 Brooke Bond “Transportation Through the Ages,” Hovercraft, nm-m. 1989 Player’s “Maritime History,” Mauretainia, nm+. And 1999 Rockwell Publishing “The Titanic Series,” Titanic birthed, ex-m+.

Lot 170.  7 Early Caramel, Tobacco and Gum Cards Showing Airplanes. The scarcest card, from the circa 1910 E40 Philadelphia Caramel “Airships” set, depicts the Gleason-Robinson biplane, g. Tobacco cards are represented by the 1912-14 T28 Duke of York-Khedival “Aeroplane Series” card showing C. D. Curtiss, vg, and bakery cards, by the Northrup XF-89 from the circa 1940 D85 Purity Pretzel “U.S. Planes” set, vg-ex. The other cards: 1941 R177 Zoom Planes #51, vg and 1939 R173 “The World in Arms” #1, 3, 6 (no plane) and 7, f-g. Eight cards.

Lot 171.  67 Real-Photo Airplane Cards from 11 Sets. Twenty-seven 2” x 3” photo cards from the 1938 Senior Service (Pattreiouex) set depict British planes, aviatrix Jean Batten, etc., vg. Also: Nine 2” x 3” cards from three 1930s Ardath sets, ex to ex-m. 1935 Pattreiouex “Sporting Events and Stars,” 2 cards, ex. 1928 Wills (New Zealand) “Units of the British Army and RAF,” 2 cards, vg. 1938 Ardath “Life in the Services,” 1 card, vg. 1937 Ardath “Our Empire,” Ensign plane, g-vg. 1925 Lambert & Butler “Homeland Events,” RAF Pageant, nm+. And 1930s Bulgaria Sport (German) featuring Ernst Udet, Germany’s second leading WWI Ace, ex-m+. Also, 23 WWII era cards, each 1 5/8” x 2 ½”, from an anonymous set, vg-ex. Almost all are U.S. planes.

Lot 173.  1933 Player & Sons “Aviary and Cage Birds” Set of 50. This is the regular-size non-transfer set. Each card front shows a colorful bird against a white background. The back contains information on the bird. Ex-m to ex-m+.

Lot 174.  Scarce 1935 Westminster Tobacco “Cinema Celebrities” Partial Set – 19 of 48. Marlene Dietrich and Clara Bow are the most familiar names in this group, which also includes Clive Brook, who played Sherlock Holmes three times and starred opposite Dietrich in Shanghai Express; Jean Parker, Elizabeth Allen, who was on the Jackie Gleason Show; Marion Davies, who had a 34-year relationship with William Randolph Hearst, and John Boles, who played Victor Moritz in the 1931 Frankenstein. Vg-ex to ex.

Lot 175.  11 1930s Real-Photo Postcards of England, 4 More from the 1950s. . All different. Ten of these sepia-photo postcards present 1930s scenes of Manchester, England. The eleventh shows Stamford. Valentine’s produced seven of them, and four are from the Excel Series. Among the scenes are the Cathedral, Whitworth Park, the Royal Infirmary and Albert Square (2 different). Six are ex, one vg+ to ex, one vg+, two vg and one g-vg. Two have 1937 postmarks. The 1950s cards, also real photos, show Buckingham Palace, Loch Lomand and Leigh-on-Sea. The fourth is a London composite. These cards average vg+. There also are two chromes, one showing Windsor and the other, Thorpe St. Andrew. 17 postcards.

Lot 176.  1938 Wills “Railway Equipment” Set of 50 Cards. Interesting set that shows some locomotives and various cars and provides an inside look at technical aspects of railroad operations. For example, one card shows how the Westinghouse air brake works. Color fronts, descriptive backs. Vg-ex to ex.

Lot 177.  1940-42 T87 Wings Cigarettes Issued by Brown & Williamson Tobacco, this near set consists of four series of 50 cards each. Cards range from p to nm+. An average grade is given for each series. Series A: 7 cards, vg-ex to ex. Series B: 31 cards, ex. Series C: 32 cards, vg-ex to ex. No Letter Series: 21 cards, g-vg.

Lot 178.  5 1941 Gum Inc. “Uncle Sam” Cards. These cards feature colorful scenes of World War II on the front and descriptive backs: #53 vg+ to ex, 55 vg+ to ex, 69 ex-m, 79 ex and 92 ex.

Lot 179.  7 1950s Cowboy Exhibit Cards - Gene Autry, John Wayne, Roy Rogers, Etc. . Bob Steele is the subject of a full-color exhibit, vg+ to ex. The six others, all different, are sepia 4-in-1 exhibits, which apparently are early 1950s reprints. Autry, Wayne, Rogers and Bill Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy) appear on separate cards, and Boyd and Autry share a card. One card includes Gabby Hayes, Johnny Mack Brown, Ken Maynard and Steele. The 4-in-1 exhibits are ex.
