Lot 95.  Boxing Cards: 1948 Leaf #48 Joe Louis, 1910 T218 Champion Pugilists Al Delmont. The Louis card grades g, and Delmont vg.

Lot 96.  Scorecard for Joe Louis’ 1951 Fight with Freddie Beshore. Boxing at Olympia Stadium in Detroit on Jan. 3, Louis scored a technical knockout in the fourth round. Five months earlier, Beshore had gone 14 rounds with heavyweight champ Ezzard Charles before losing by TKO. The two-panel 8 ½” x 11” scorecard has photos of Louis and Beshore and career information inside. G-vg with results of the Louis-Beshore and preliminary bouts provided in pencil.

Lot 97.  4 1950s Issues of Boxing and Wrestling, 1959 Issue of The Ring. The Boxing and Wrestling issues are for June 1952 and May, July and Oct. 1953. They average vg to vg-ex. Randy Turpin is on one cover, and articles cover football Hall of Fame members Leo Nomellini as a wrestler and Floyd Patterson as a “newcomer with a future.” Patterson and Ingemar Johansson are on the cover of the July 1959 Ring, vg+

Lot 98.  Sugar Ray Robinson 1 ¾” Black & White Pin. Robinson held welterweight or middleweight titles in the 1940s-50s. Associated Press selected him as the greatest boxer of the 20th century. Ex-m.

Lot 119.  1926 Lambert & Butler “Who’s Who in Sport (1926)” Partial Set with Tunney. Issued in New Zealand, this set comprises real sepia photos of men and women star athletes on the front and a brief summary of their accomplishments on the back. Thirty-three of 50 cards are present. Among the stars are heavyweight champion Gene Tunney nm+, golfers Aubrey Boomer vg-ex and two English Ladies title winners, Cecil Leitch nm and Molly Gourlay vg, Wimbledon champions Kitty McKane Godfree vg, Jean Borotra ex-m and Suzanne Lenglen nm+, auto racing champ H. O. D. Segrave nm+, and Gertrude Ederle, an American and the first woman to swim the English Channel g-vg. Cards present are #1, 3, 4, 6-8, 10-12, 14, 15, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 32-34, 36-41, 43-48 and 50. Slightly more than half of the cards not graded above are g to vg-ex. Most of the rest are ex to ex-m, with a few ex-m+ to nm+.

Lot 120.  14 Cards Representing the Olympics, Soccer, Rugby, Lacrosse, Boxing, Golf, Etc. The oldest card, which shows a lacrosse game, is from the 1917 Wills “Sports of the World” set. It has a Village Maid back, vg. Other older cards include: 1926 Ogden’s “Famous Rugby Players,” J. W. Brough, ex. 1930 Drapkin “Sporting Celebrities in Action,” D. Love, quarter miler, vg-ex. 1930 Mitchell, “Old Sporting Prints,” J. Goodman, ex-m. Churchman 1938 “Association Footballers,” H. Betmead, vg, and 1939 “Kings of Speed,” W. L. Fiske, ex. Harry Vardon, who won the British Open a record six times and the U.S. Open once, represents golf in a modern “Old Golfing Greats” postcard, vg-ex. Six cards are from the 1979 “Olympic Greats” set, John Kelly nm-m, Pat McCormick vg, Jesse Owens nm-m, Wilma Rudolph nm-m, Mark Spitz ex-m+ and Johnny Weissmuller vg-ex. Also, a B.D.V. Cigarettes card that shows boxer “Bonnie” Muir on one side and sculler Major Goodsell on the other. Ex+.

Lot 134.  9 1940s-60s Sports Magazines with Baseball Covers, Including Ted Williams. The Splendid Splinter shares the cover of the Aug. 1947 issue of Sport with Joe Cronin’s son. Vg issue, classic photo. The May 1961 Sport also is included, and it has photos of Mantle, Groat and Jim Taylor. Other magazines: Sept. 1948 Sport Life, Boudreau cover, vg. Fall 1948 Sport Pix, Hank Sauer, vg, date written on. Street and Smith’s All Sports Summer Review, women’s softball cover, vg. Aug. 1950 Sports Stars, Art Houtteman, vg+. Lot 140.  Philadelphia Sports Publications: Phillies, Athletics, Sixers, Flyers and Eagles. . Two items commemorate the Athletics: A 1 ½” blue and white circa 1950 “Athletics” pin with blue and white ribbon, and a Philadelphia Inquirer magazine with a feature on “The 1929 Athletics: Really the Greatest Ever.” Ex-m. Most of this collection focuses on the Phillies: Programs for 1940 vs. Chicago, 1972 vs. Expos and 1988 vs. Pittsburgh, vg-ex. Yearbook for 1986 ex, a calendar for 1987 ex-m and two 1980s Phan-0-Grams. A 9” x 12” poster marks Pete Rose’s all-time leadership in hits. There also is a copy of the 1978 Baseball the Phillies Way with an uncut panel of 27 SSPC Phillies cards including Schmidt, nm, a 1980 Inquirer special insert celebrating the Phils’ 1980 World Championship, ex-m, an opened bag of Phillies Super Star lunch bags including Schmidt and a 16-page Inquirer special from 1989 paying tribute to Schmidt. The 76ers are represented by an ex 1979-80 yearbook with Julius Erving and two copies of a 9 ½” x 12 ¼” team photo from 1977-78, vg-ex. For the Flyers, there’s a 1977-78 team photo, as well as two 12” x 18” posters for the Flyers’ Fan Appreciation Day, vg-ex. The Eagles are covered in a 1981 Inquirer insert. As a bonus, there are more than 20 sports sections, mainly from the Inquirer, covering the 1970s-90s.
