Lot 41. Complete Set of 14 Baseball Joe Books Written by Lester Chadwick, 1912-26. “Chadwick” was one of several pseudonyms used by Howard R. Garis, who also wrote books featuring the Bobbsey Twins, the Camp Fire Girls and Tom Swift. The Baseball Joe books capture the exploits of fictional Joe Matson from high school to the major leagues. Published by Cupples & Leon, the titles are: Baseball Joe On the School Nine (1912), Of the Silver Stars (1912), At Yale (1913), In the Central League (1914), In the Big League (1915), On the Giants (1916), In the World Series (1917), Around the World (1918), Home Run King (1922), Saving the League (1923), Captain of the Team (1924), Champion of the League (1925), Club Owner (1926) and Pitching Wizard (1928). All of the books are hardbound with blue impressions on gray boards. They average vg to vg-ex without dust jackets; Pitching Wizard has most of the cloth torn away along the spine, which remains intact. All are complete, and four have an owner’s name on the designated page at the front.

Lot 42. Bob Feller Autograph, Books, Periodicals and Advertising. The signature of the Hall of Fame pitcher is on the dust jacket of Pitching to Win (How to Pitch) by Bob Feller, 1952, vg-ex book with owner’s name inside the front cover, vg+ dj that has a couple of stains along the spine and looks much better than the grade indicates. Feller’s signature is a bold 10. 2. Bob Feller’s Strikeout Story, 1948 Bantam paperback, ex-m. 3. How to Improve Your Baseball, 1957 Motorola softcover with 80 pages full of step-by-step illustrations. Vg-ex. 4. Nov. 1951 Baseball Magazine with Bob Feller cover. Inside is an article entitled “Best Rookies of 1951” and featuring Mickey Mantle, vg-ex. 5-14. Full-page magazine ads, average size of 10” x 14”, including Vitalis, Ward’s Cake, General Electric, Gillette (half page), Virginia Feller and the kids in a Betty Crocker ad and five different Wheaties ads including one ad with Bob in Navy uniform and a two-page spread. Lot 43. Autographed Copy of Win, Lose, or Draw by Chicago Sportswriter Warren Brown. Brown was one of the top sportswriters during the first half of the 20th century. Before landing in Chicago with the Herald-Examiner, he wrote for the San Francisco Bulletin. There, he was among the first to recognize Jack Dempsey’s potential. In Chicago, he labeled Red Grange the “Galloping Ghost.” He later wrote the Putnam history of the Chicago Cubs. In this book, published in 1947, Brown provides stories on a wide range of sports from his newspaper career. Vg-ex book, g+ dj. Brown signed the front end-page, and his personalized message “To the Boss!” is mint 9. Brown passed away in 1978. Autograph authenticated by Kevin Keating.

Lot 44. 1950 Softcover Book: Golden Jubilee of Connie Mack and the A’s 1901-1950. This 64-page booklet was put out by the Athletics to honor “The Grand Old Man of Baseball” and his 50 years with the club. Contains history and photos chronicling his rise from playing catcher for the Washington Nationals in the late 1880s to manager of the Philadelphia Athletics. Wonderful book with an amazing amount of baseball history. G-vg detached cover, vg+ to ex pages with the center folio loose. More than 50 photos.
