Lot 254. 100+ 1900 to Early 1940s Sports Newspapers. A multitude of sports are covered, including skating, table tennis, auto racing, yacht racing, golf, swimming, track, motor boat racing, cycling, soap box derby, tennis, boxing, baseball and football. Interesting sports articles cover Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, Jesse Owens, Dizzy Dean, Rocky Marciano, Bob Feller, Willie Pep, the Kentucky Derby, the 1924 Paris Olympics and the 1936 Berlin Olympics. These newspapers also cover weightier subjects of the era: the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party, the Spanish Civil War and the Depression. Prohibition is a hot topic, particularly in advertising. This collection includes 69 different packages of newspaper sections, mostly from The Oregonian and The New York Times. Some packages include multiple sections. They are neatly archived in plastic bags, measuring on average 17” x 23”; each bag holds a complete 1-8 page section. The condition is ex or better. Twenty of the packages have full-page photo spreads, including a 1941 Tennis War Relief Benefit, “The Negroes in Sports are Breaking the Bank!” including Jesse Owens and Joe Louis, 1924 Olympics, 1936 Olympics, motorcycle champions including Orie Steel and Jim Davis; the Indy 500, a 1933 Camel ad featuring the New York Rangers’ Bill Cook, and Babe Ruth in several different photos. In addition, one package contains 14 different New York Times Photo Sections. There is also an 1889 National Police Gazette cover and two-page engraving spread of the Searle-O’Connor Sculling Race. No shortage of incredible articles, photographs and advertisements.
