Baseball Programs   13 Lots

Lot 109.  1927 Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh Scorecard - Traynor, the Waners, Etc. Made up of some of the finest players ever to wear Pirates uniforms, the 1927 team edged out New York and St. Louis for the NL pennant before falling in four games to the New York Yankees. The Pirates boasted five future Hall of Fame players – Paul and Lloyd Waner, Pie Traynor, Joe Cronin and Kiki Cuyler, while Gabby Hartnett and Hack Wilson were in the lineup for the Cubs. The 16-page program, including covers, is scored in pencil for an April 30 game won by the Cubs, 5-4. Twenty-five Pirates are pictured in the program, and so is new HoF member Barney Dreyfuss, the team president. An advertisement inside shows a drawing of Honus Wagner. The program is technically vg, looks better, and is very scarce.
Winning Bid $180.

Lot 110.  4 1950s Pirates Yearbooks + 1979. In this collection of yearbooks, Branch Rickey’s influence on the Pirates becomes evident, even though his reign as general manager ended in 1955. One of Rickey’s legacies was an improved farm system, which contributed to the Pirates’ World Championship in 1960. The yearbooks are for 1953 vg-ex, 1957, ex-m, and 1958 and 1959, both ex+. Dick Groat, a rookie in 1952, is pictured in the 1953 edition. Groat spent 1953-54 in military service. Among the stars pictured are Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski, Ralph Kiner, Vernon Law and Bob Friend. Dave Parker is on the cover of the 1979 yearbook, which has plenty of Willie Stargell content. Ex-m. The 1953 and 1957 yearbooks are comparatively scarce.
Winning Bid $110.

Lot 112.  Unused 1970 Cincinnati at Pittsburgh NL Championship Program. Pittsburgh marked the opening season of Three Rivers Stadium by capturing the NL East title. The Reds then swept them in the Championship Series. The 28-page program, including covers, is nm-m; it is unstapled. The program includes photos of Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, Gene Alley and Bill Mazeroski, and Dock Ellis. This program is scarce, especially in this condition.
Minimum Bid $100.

Lot 125.  New York Yankees Yearbooks for 1956, 1957, 1960. The Yankees were AL or World Champions in all three of the seasons these yearbooks represent. The 1956 yearbook from Jay Publishing is the “Big League” version with a blue and white cover. This vg+ to ex edition has photos of all the familiar names – Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Casey Stengel, Whitey Ford, Bill Skowron, Phil Rizzuto, Billy Martin and two relative newcomers, Elston Howard and Don Larsen. The 1957 yearbook, also the “Big League” edition from Jay Publishing, commemorates Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series. Among the rookies pictured are Bobby Richardson, Tony Kubek and Marv Thronberry, who would find fame with the New York Mets. The cover has some scribbling in the top right; otherwise, it’s a nice, tight copy with ex-m+ contents. The 1960 yearbook, a first edition, ushers in the Maris-Mantle era. Ex with light stains about 1” x 2” on about one-half of the inside pages.
Winning Bid $121.

Lot 189.  6 1930s-40s Detroit Tigers Scorecards Including Autographs! All are for Detroit home games. 1. 1937 vs. Boston, scored in pencil with HoFers Greenberg, Cronin and Foxx on the roster. Signed by Billy Rogell, Eric McNair and Herb Pennock in pencil. The signatures are 10s on an ex-m program. 2. 1938 vs. New York Yankees, scored in pencil and signed by Ray Hayworth and Roxie Lawson, 10s also in pencil, ex program with soft vertical crease. Roster includes Appling and Averill. 5. 1939 vs. Chicago, scored in pencil. Note under the roster reads “Dykes, McNair, Lyons banished from game in 4th inning.” Ex-m. 6. 1940 vs. Yankees. Scored in pencil, DiMaggio on the roster, g-vg. Vintage collection of Tigers’ scorecards with many HoFers represented. Autographs authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $113.

Lot 190.  1944 World Series Program, Baseball Magazine Supplements, Autographs. In what was known as the “Streetcar Series,” the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the neighboring Browns in six games. The series marked only the third time that two teams that shared the same stadium played each other and the first time that the teams were not from New York. This Game 1 program is neatly scored and shows the Browns 2-1 win behind the two-hit complete-game pitching of Denny Galehouse. Inside the 36-page program, three players have signed by their photos: Ellis Clary (died 2000), Frank Mancuso (d. 2007) and Don Gutteridge. The signatures are nm-m 8s and mint 9s. Autographs authenticated by Kevin Keating. The program is complete and vg to vg+ with the scorecard center spread loose. Baseball Magazine issued the supplements, or “Player Posters,” 1910-57. The supplement picturing the Cardinals as “World Champions” is ex, and the “American League Pennant Winners” Browns supplement is vg+ to ex. The supplements alone are worth our MB.
Winning Bid $152.

Lot 191.  1946 St. Louis Cardinals at Boston Red Sox Game 3 Program. This vg-ex 38-page oversized program is neatly scored in pencil, substitutions included. The center folio is loose. Game totals and “3rd Game” are written in pencil on the front cover, which presents attractive artwork of a Red Sox batter by Lon Keller. The interior includes photos and brief career summaries of the players, including Williams, Doerr and Dom DiMaggio for Boston and Musial, Schoendienst and Garagiola for St. Louis. Other Hall of Fame members shown are Chandler, Harridge, Frick, Yawkey, Collins, Cronin (Red Sox manager) and Foxx. The Red Sox won Game 3, but the Cardinals won the Series behind the pitching of Harry Brecheen, who won three games, and the hitting of Harry “The Hat” Walker.
Winning Bid $318.

Lot 192.  Run of Cleveland Indians Yearbooks, 1949-53. These “Sketchbooks” are the second through the sixth published by the Indians. They picture some of the best players in Indians history: Boudreau, Doby, Feller, Lemon and Wynn, along with Satchel Paige, signed by Cleveland in 1948. Doby, of course, was the American League’s first African-American player. Each yearbook has about 60 pages, including a team photo center spread. 1. 1949, vg-ex cover with ex inside pages. 2. 1950, nm inside pages with vg+ cover. 3. 1951, vg+ cover with several stamped letters, ex-m inside. Team centerfold is unattached and has a 1” tear at fold. 4. 1952, vg cover with nm interior. 5. 1953 “Play Ball!” theme, vg+ cover with ex inside pages. These yearbooks are nicely designed with some excellent photography.
Winning Bid $102.

Lot 193.  Dodgers Yearbooks for the Historic 1955 Season + 1958, 1966. The Brooklyn Dodgers won pennants in 1941, 1947, 1949, 1952 and 1953, only to fall to the New York Yankees in the World Series. The slogan at the end of each season of defeat became “Wait ‘til next year.” In 1955, next year finally came. A dramatic play by Sandy Amoros and Pee Wee Reese combined with stellar pitching by Johnny Podres won Game 7 and gave the Dodgers their only Series win while in Brooklyn. 1. This 1955 yearbook features the “Brooklyn Bum” artwork of Willard Mullin on the cover, reaching for the stars. Ex with some separation at the spine and owner stamp on cover. Inside, rookie Sandy Koufax is pictured. 2. When Walter O’Malley ran into difficulty building a new stadium in New York, he moved the Dodgers to Los Angeles. This 1958 yearbook marks their arrival on the West Coast. Ex+. 3. The 1966 yearbook tells the tale of the Dodgers’ 1965 World Series win over the Twins. Ex-m with price sticker on the cover. These yearbooks feature no less than 10 future HoFers including: Drysdale, Koufax, Jackie Robinson, Reese, Lasorda, Sutton, Snider, Campanella and O’Malley himself.
Winning Bid $198.

Lot 194.  9 Philadelphia Phillies Yearbooks, 1955-81, 2 Additional Publications. The keys to this collection are the 1955 and 1956 yearbooks. Lot 195.  9 1950s-60s St. Louis Cardinals Yearbooks. These yearbooks signal the end of Stan Musial’s legendary career and chart the growth of a new team that would appear in the World Series three times in 1960s with the help of Lou Brock and Bob Gibson. 1. 1958, Curt Flood’s debut yearbook, ex+. 2. 1960, Gibson’s rookie season captured, ex. 3. 1961, ex. 4. 1962, “Musial Milestones” cover, ex+. 5. 1963, Musial on the cover, vg-ex. 6. 1964, ex. 7. 1965, Gibson cover. Lou Brock’s first St. Louis appearance inside. This yearbook provides coverage of the Cards’ 1964 World Series win over the Yankees and shows HoFer Steve Carlton in his rookie year, ex with soft vertical crease. 8. 1966, Busch Stadium commemorative cover, ex to ex+. 9. 1969, ex+.
Winning Bid $245.

Lot 196.  Original Mailing Envelope for the First Issue of Sports Illustrated. If you have the inaugural issue of SI, but not the special envelope it was mailed in, this lot looks like a winner! SI mailed the Aug. 16, 1954, issue, which had Eddie Mathews on the cover, in an envelope with photos representing 16 different sports on one side. This envelope has a mailing label, a 1” stain toward the top and shows toning along the right edge. It has creases primarily around the edges and is free of tears. It’s well worth our MB.
Winning Bid $55.

Lot 197.  Scarce Sports Illustrated Second Issue with the Yankees “Card” Insert. Dated Aug. 23, 1954, this second issue, with golf as its cover theme, is tougher to find than the first. The cover, which has a mailing label, and the inside pages are vg-ex. There are stains on the back cover. The very collectible 1954 Topps Yankees insert, which includes Mickey Mantle, shows very light creasing. The nine cards in the bottom row have a border that is thinner than the top border; in some issues, these cards have no border at all. The colors are birgh. The fronts and backs of the cards are printed.
Winning Bid $152.
