Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell on a 1941 New York Giants Team Ball Signed by 24.
Lot 142. Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell on a 1941 New York Giants Team Ball Signed by 24. Ott’s signature is comparatively difficult to come by, and there seem to be a good number of team-signed baseballs with clubhouse or ghost signatures of Ott. This one is real, rating a 3-4 on a deeply toned, lightly shellacked g 2 to vg 3 Reach “Official League” ball. Other signers include Ace Adams, Harry Gumbert, Bump Hadley, Carl Hubbell, Bill Lohrman, Ken O’Dea, Joe Orengo and Johnny Rucker. These and other signatures range from 1 to 4 and average 2-3. Hadley’s is one of the stronger signatures, and its presence suggests that the ball was signed early in the season. He played in only three games for the Giants before winding up in Philadelphia with the A’s to conclude his career. Hadley is best known for beaning Mickey Cochrane and ending his playing career. Hadley was a hard-throwing pitcher whose long suit was not control, and Cochrane lost track of the ball and didn’t get out of the way.
Winning Bid $138.
