19th Century Baseball & Other Sports   10 Lots

Lot 43.  Extremely Rare 1860s-70s CDV of Cincinnati Baseball Player Conrad Meyer. This 2 ½” x 4” CDV came from an estate sale in Cincinnati in 1983. The J. J. Meyer Studio, identified on the back, produced it. The player is Conrad Meyer, brother of the photographer. According to Conrad’s great grandson, who conducted the sale, the Meyers established an amateur base ball team, called the Northside Greys, in the 1860s. The Greys played a variety of opponents in Ohio and Kentucky. The CDV is an exceptional example from baseball’s earliest days. Several horizontal creases obvious on the back are barely noticeable on the front. Written on the back is “Conrad Meyer,” which the grandson identified as Myer’s autograph. The sepia photo is sharply focused and shows excellent contrast. Technically vg with an ex appearance.
Winning Bid $484.

Lot 44.  1885-86 Boston Beaneaters Official Score Card. The team known as the Boston Beaneaters from 1883 until 1906 eventually became the Boston Braves. The presence of (Tom) Poorman in the pre-printed lineup dates the card at either 1885 or 1886. John Morrill is also in the lineup. In 1883, Morrill batted .316, became manager in mid-season, played six different positions and led the team to the National League pennant. Only the front half of this scorecard remains, and it features wonderful vintage cover artwork titled “Three Strikes.” With several creases, one light to moderate, and a very minor stain, the front is g-vg. On the inside, the Boston lineup is printed, and the card is neatly scored in pencil. The inside has very minor paper loss that does not affect any letters, limited paper residue, several stains, several light inoffensive creases - and tons of character.
Winning Bid $198.

Lot 45.  1887 N28 Allen & Ginter John Ward Graded A Authentic by SGC.
Winning Bid $242.

Lot 46.  1887 “Champion Nine” Baseball Cabinet Sepia Photograph. Superb photo in every way! Nine men are posed, three with bats and another with a glove and mask, dressed in period uniforms. One seated young man holds a chalk board up that reads “Champion Nine, Games: Five Won! Lost – None.” The board is dated 1887. Gorgeous photo with clear images and strong contrast. There is vertical fold down the center that only affects one player. Early in the photo’s life, the mount was trimmed on all sides but the bottom, and holes were punched for the hanging ribbon at the top.
Winning Bid $198.

Lot 47.  33 Different 19th Century Baseball Trade Cards. This collection contains many scarce cards. Many have had the border trimmed away, and the trimming on a few is more extensive. H 804-1 Baby Talk: “No I didn’ stike at dot!” vg-ex. “I sink I tan hit it,” border trimmed, p-f appearance. H804-1B “5” Series (formerly H804-20): “Oh, I’se all’ite” Little Mascot, p-f, displays better. H804-1C: “We win de dame,” tiny stain in upper right corner, vg+, nice card. H 804-2 Pixies: “A’ Panic-er!” ¼” trim at the top and “Judgment!” significantly trimmed. Both p with a vg+ appearance. H 804-4 Capadura: Complete set of 5. All slightly trimmed to about 3” x 4 ¾” or larger. Four have Capadura identification removed. Technically p with fronts that have a vg and better appearance as trimmed; stains on some backs. H 804-5: “F-o-u-l Ball” and “Out-On A Fly.” Borders removed from both, and they are about 2 ½” x 4 ¼”. P. The appearance of one is vg, and the other, p. 1878 H 804-6 Forbes: Near set - 4 of 5. Two are untrimmed – “Muff” p and “Twist” f. Muff is unusual because the title is missing, and the card looks better than the grade suggests. “Foul” and “Home Run” are both significantly trimmed, to about 3” x 3 ½”, and p with a much better appearance. H 804-7 Garling Oil: Complete set of 5. “Something must be done ‘Put it there!’” is untrimmed and f-g. The others are trimmed to 3” x 4” and larger. “A close Affair. Hugging the Bat” is only slightly trimmed and has a vg appearance. The others have a vg appearance on the front and have minor back damage. H 804-15: These cards have a “9” in the lower right. Only one is trimmed (border removed) - “Where D’ye Want It? (Pitcher)” The others are - “A Fine Catch (Left Field),” g-vg, front evenly toned. “A Home Run (Champion Spurter)” f. And “Not Out (Umpire.),” damage to blank back, g. H 804-30: “MARS Behind the Bat,” ex. Scarce issue. Six other cards are on the Frank Keetz Checklist of cards with and without titles: #12: “He may yet become President,” slight trim, vg appearance with glue residue on the back. A classic! #201: Nude baby with ball and crossed bats. Artwork similar to H804-1. Tiny area of paper loss; otherwise, vg. #203: Batter standing over catcher. P. #206: Five players and umpire in game; “22.” Vg. #210: Well dressed boy, tiny ball, “359.” Back damage, p-f. #213: 3 pixies. 2 ¾” x 4 ¼” and possibly trimmed. Damaged back; front has a g-vg appearance.
Winning Bid $297.

Lot 48.  1888 A16 Allen & Ginter World’s Champions Album Page with Charles Comiskey. The album is incredibly desirable, and so are the individual pages. This one features baseball players Jack Glassock, Joseph Mulvey and Comiskey as they are pictured on the 1888 Allen & Ginter N28 cards. Billiards player J. Schaefer is also pictured. The colors are remarkable. Striking and vibrant, they seem to jump from the page. Bits of staining near the bottom of the page do not detract from its absolute beauty. Crease-free and magnificent for display! Ex.
Winning Bid $198.

Lot 49.  1888 A16 Allen & Ginter World’s Champions Album Page with John L. Sullivan. The desirable album is rare, and so are the individual pages. This page features pugilists Charlie Mitchell, Jack McAuliffe, Jimmy Carney and Sullivan as they are pictured on the 1888 Allen & Ginter N28 cards. This page features great colors, superb period graphics and bits of staining near the bottom and top that do not detract from a remarkable appearance. Neither do two small creases visible only on the back near the lower right corner. There is a tiny bit of paper loss on Sullivan’s left arm that is barely noticeable. Vg to vg-ex with a tremendous appearance.
Minimum Bid $100.

Lot 50.  2 1888 A16 Allen & Ginter World’s Champions Album Pages with Billiards Players. Each of these very desirable and equally prized pages features four players as they are pictured on their 1888 Allen & Ginter N28 cards. Each features bold colors and superb period graphics. Bits of staining that do not detract are found on each of the pages. The first page, which has a few small inoffensive creases near two corners, has W.M. Sexton, Maurice Daly, Geo. F. Slosson and Jos. Dion. Vg-ex. The second page, which is free of creases, presents J.L. Malone, Albert Frey, Yank Adams and M. Vignauz. Ex. Great for display!
Minimum Bid $100.

Lot 51.  1888 A16 Allen & Ginter World’s Champions Album Front Cover with John Ward. Joining the Hall of Fame pitcher-shortstop on this fabulous album cover is another Hall of Famer, pugilist Jack Dempsey. Both athletes are pictured just as they are on their cards in the 1888 Allen & Ginter N28 issue. Dempsey, incidentally, is Jack “Nonpareil” Dempsey, an outstanding middleweight, not the “Manassa Mauler.” The graphics on this cover are superb. A section about ½” x ¾” is torn away from the lower right corner, and there are small tears and chips on the right and left borders, along with a bit of staining. Technically f-g, it presents far better and will contribute nicely to a 19th century sports display.
Winning Bid $102.

Lot 52.  2 1888 A16 Allen & Ginter Album Pages with Wrestlers, Oarsmen. Each page from the World’s Champions album contains the same images that are used in the tobacco company’s N28 individual cards. One page has four wrestlers - Theo Bauer, Joe Acton, Jimmy Carroll and Wm. Muldoon. It has some inoffensive creases and stains in the borders. Oarsmen Wm. Beach, Geo. Bubear, Geo. H. Hosmer and Wallace Ross populate the second page, which has some staining, primarily in the right border. It is free of creases and ex. Both pages are great for display.
Winning Bid $75.
