Lot 496. 20 1940s-50s Photos of the Brown U. Hockey Team with Moulton, Whiston. Although hockey has been played for decades by Brown University students, it became a recognized sport only in 1947. Alumnus and star athlete Wes “Wecky” Moulton was named the schools first hockey coach. Moulton, who also coached tennis, is shown in four photos. Don Whitson was one of Moulton’s star pupils. A goaltender, Whitson gained national attention for two reasons: 1. After suffering a mouth injury in 1948-49, he became the first college player to wear a face mask. 2. In 1949-50, he was regarded as one of the top college goalies in the country. In 1950-51, he won named MVP of the Frozen Four tournament. Subsequently, he coached the Brown hockey team 1953-55. He is in four of the photos. Seventeen photos are 8”x10”. Four show the 1949-50 team, which won the Ivy League Championship. On photo includes “Hoppy” Hunt, captain of Brown’s 1898 Hockey team, along with Moulton and Eddie Vincent, captain of the 1948-49 team. Another features the 1951-52 co-captains. There are several smaller photos. Nine of the photos are action shots. The photos technically are g-vg. Focus and contrast generally are excellent, and the photos generally hold significant historical interest. Players’ names are written on the front of a number of photos.

Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe Collectibles. 1. 1993 Upper Deck 8 ½” x 11” Hockey Heroes promotion highlighting the “Gordie Howe 65th Birthday Celebration Tour.” It includes a photo of Howe and Gretzky together. Lot 499. Eastern Hockey League Champion Long Island Ducks 1964-65 Program. Long before Anaheim had Might Ducks, Long Island had plain old Ducks that captured the 1965 Eastern Hockey League title. The 52-page program contains features on players for the Ducks and NHL players as well. Two Ducks who are pictured had NHL careers, Gene Achtymichuk and Ed Stankiewicz. The program, for a game against Clinton, has a vg-ex cover and ex-m contents. Inside the program are two inserts with playoff statistics. The league folded in 1973.

Lot 500. Early Lund Youth Hockey Stick. The manufacturer’s paper label remains attached with minor chips: “L.A. Lund Co., St. Paul 14, Minnesota and Laconia, New Hampshire.” Stamped “Youths,” the hockey stick is free of cracks or splits and measures 41 ½”.

Lot 501. Hockey Champion-ship Pins, Stan’ka Figurines. The pins by Peter David commemorate the Stanley Cup Championships of the Pittsburgh Penguins, back-to-back, 1991-92; the Montreal Canadiens, 1993, and the New York Rangers, 1994. Mint on the original cards. The four Stan’ka rocking figurines with chimes, which were produced in Russia, represent the Canadiens (two different) and the Mighty Ducks (two different). Each 4 ½” figurine is mint in its original box. Also, four patches featuring the Montreal Amateur Athletic Assocition “Winged Wheel” logo. Nm-m.

Lot 509. Stephane Richer Autograph on a Stanley Cup Replica. Playing left wing, Richer contributed to Stanely Cup Championships with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986 and the New Jersey Devils in 1995. His signature is on the felt bottom of an 8” ceramic replica of the Stanley Cup. The replica has been broken and repaired. The signature is unaffected and grades 8-9 of 10. Lot 510. 1996 Team USA Mini-Mask Signed by Mike Richter of the New York Rangers. Richter was one of the most successful U.S.-born NHL goaltenders. In 1994, he led the Rangers to the Stanley Cup championship, and in 1996, he was the Most Valuable Player as the US. won the World Cup of Hockey.
