Lot 527.  1928 West Virginia University Football Neck Tie. First time we’ve seen one of these attractive ties, which apparently were given to lettermen in the 1928 season. On a dark blue background, it has the letters “WVU” atop a player in the set position and the year “1928” in gold.

Lot 528.  3 Unusual Early 1900s Football Collectibles. 1. 1 7/8” x 2 ½” stamp promoting “FAO Schwarz Sport Goods.” F. First we’ve seen this stamp. 2. The Art of Line Play, a four-panel Draper-Maynard pamphlet by Dartmouth coach Jess Hawley. He coached Dartmouth 1923-28. G. 3. Football Schedules 1937 from The Saturday Evening Post. Vg-ex. Besides schedules, the booklet presents the Post’s 1936 All-American team, which included 1936 and 1937 Heisman Trophy winners Larry Kelley and Clint Frank, as well as Sammy Baugh.

Lot 529.  Early 1900s Football Memorabilia. 1. “Play Football” punch board for T&B cigars, unpunched, ex. 2. Draper-Maynard envelope with a football and the Lucky Dog, addressed, vg. 3. Harvard Stadium two-panel color panoramic postcard, circa 1903 from Raphael Tuck & Sons, vg-ex. 4-10. Seven football ticket stubs: 1929, USC at California (2) and USC at Stanford. Two are glued to paper; otherwise, g with all text present on the fronts. 1931, USC at California, irregularly torn, f. 1932, Washington State at USC (2), both vg-ex, and Utah at USC, vg-ex as irregularly torn. 11-15. Five vintage photos, one 3 ¼” x 4 ¾” of a player identified as Bill Donovan, and four 5” x 7” of game action involving unidentified teams. Vg-ex. Lot 531.  7 Vintage College Football Photos, Some Featuring Hall of Famers, + a Bonus. Photos are b&w or sepia. 1. Bob Higgins, Penn State head coach, 1930-1948. This 6” x 9 ¼” photo by the Audio Visual Aids Service of Penn State features Higgins kneeling in coach’s garb on the field. Ex. 2. 7” by 9” photo the text says it all: “Chicago: Wes Fesler (left), newly appointed Minnesota football coach, meets Woody Hayes, Ohio State’s new coach, at Big Ten coaches meeting here today. Hayes succeeds Fesler, who coached Ohio team last year.” Acme Telephoto. Ex. 3. 5” x 7 ½” action photo of Dick Kazmaier. Lot 532.  1929 Fremont and Roosevelt High School (Cal.) Football Programs. Both schools serve the Los Angeles area. A 16-page Oct. 18 program is for the Fremont at Roosevelt game, which Roosevelt won, 7-0, according to scoring inside. Interestingly, the program apparently was sponsored by the school’s R.O.T.C. Rough Rider Battalion. Vg-ex. A ticket for the game, which is glued to stiff paper, has a vg-ex front. A ticket for the Freemont-Garfield game, also glued to stiff paper, has a vg front. Two programs are for the Fremont Alumni vs. Varsity game on Nov. 19. Both are in the shape of a football. One is ex, and the other is vg, partially glued to a sheet of paper. Scoring in the second indicates that the Varsity won, 21-18. Also in the shape of a football is the “Senior Program, Class of Winter’30,” a Dec. 5 music and dance program. Part of the back is glued to a sheet of paper; otherwise, ex-m.

Lot 533.  1930s-40s Vintage Notre Dame Football Pin with Ribbons and figurine. The helmet, without a face guard, and the early Thermo-Plastic construction date this colorful 2” figurine as a product of the 1930s-40s. Ex+.

Lot 534.  1940s Football Programs for Albright, Ithaca, F&M, Muhlenberg, Boyerstown. These three programs feature excellent cover graphics and a glimpse of small-college or high school football in the 1940s. Two programs are for 1942 games at Albright College in Reading, Pa., one with Ithaca, vg+, and the other with Franklin and Marshall, g. The third program, from 1945, is for the Muhlenberg at Boyertown High School game, g-vg. The college programs have 12 pages, and the high school program, eight.

Lot 535.  Ticket for a 1944 Washington Redskins vs. March Field Exhibition Game. The ticket, stamped “Sample Ticket” on the back, is a serviceman’s complete General Admission ticket for the game on Aug. 25 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Proceeds were designated to go to Army Charities. The Redskins faced a military team composed of All-Stars from March Field, now March Air Reserve Base, near Riverside, Cal. The ticket has two punches at each end, a ½” tear and a couple of tiny creases. Uncommon relic of World War II.

Lot 536.  1947 AAFC Program – Chicago Rockets at New York (Football) Yankees. Fielding teams from 1946-49, the All-America Football Conference was the first U.S. sports league that was truly national. Among the players were future NFL stars. For example, in this program for a Sept. 5 game, “Crazy Legs” Hirsch is pictured with the Rockets, and Buddy Young with the Yankees. The New York squad won the Eastern Division title and then lost to Cleveland and Otto Graham in the championship game. Colorful front cover features the Yankees’ football logo superimposed on Yankee Stadium. Back cover has a full page Chesterfield ad with Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Sid Luckman and others. Ex.

Lot 537.  Football Book: A Pass and a Prayer by Clair Bee. Part of the Chip Hilton series, this 1951 first edition hardback is about ex in a scarce, nicely illustrated g-vg dust jacket. The owner’s name is on the front end page.

Lot 538.  1951 AP Wirephoto of Alan Ameche, Future Heisman Trophy Winner. Ameche, a freshman halfback, is shown with two other Wisconsin players after the Badgers defeated Northwestern, 41-0. Ameche ran for 371 yards. Pictured with him are halfback Jerry Witt and quarterback Johnny Cotta. Ameche won the Heisman Trophy in 1954. The 8” x 10” photo with caption is vg-ex and displays as ex.

Lot 539.  Dec. 7, 1952 Program and Ticket Stub - Dallas Texans at Philadelphia Eagles. Program is from a game at Shibe Park. The Texans, in their first and last NFL year, were actually a transplanted version of the New York Yanks franchise, which also had failed. Among the Texans’ players were Gino Marchetti, George Taliaferro and Zollie Toth. The Eagles included Chuck Bednarik. Pictures of these players are found inside the program, along with those of Sammy Baugh, Lou Groza, Otto Graham, Dante Lavelli, Len Ford and Frank Gifford. Program is vg-ex with pencil notations on the two center pages. Ticket stub is p.

Lot 540.  4 1960s NFL Playoff Programs. 1. Green Bay at Los Angeles Rams, Dec. 23, 1967, Western Conference Playoff. Program has photos of Lombardi, Nitschke, Starr, etc. The Packers won, 28-7. Vg-ex. 2. Cleveland Browns at Dallas Cowboys, Dec. 24, 1967, Eastern Conference Championship Game. Program features photos of Lilly, Meredith, Reeves, Landry and Warfield. The Cowboys won this contest, 52-14, and then lost the championship game to the Packers. Ex+. 3. Minnesota Vikings at Baltimore Colts, Dec. 22, 1968, Western Conference Championship. Photos of Unitas, Bubba Smith, Mackey, Shula and Bud Grant. Colts 24, Vikings 14. Ex-m. 4. Rams at Vikings, Dec. 27, 1969, Western Conference Playoff. Lot 541.  Empire Football League Game-Used Ball. Formed in 1969, the EFL is a semi-pro league with teams, now or in the past, in Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Connecticut, Quebec and Ontario. The Scranton, Pa., squad has been the league’s dominant team. The Wilson ball, probably from the 1970s, shows substantial use; the two white stripes are almost worn away. The “EFL” and “Empire Football League” stamped impressions remain relatively strong.
