Jan. 29, 1925 Sepia Photo of Track Legends Paavo Nurmi and Jake Weber.

Lot 116. Jan. 29, 1925 Sepia Photo of Track Legends Paavo Nurmi and Jake Weber. The photo of Paavo Nurmi and “Stuttering” Jake Weber was taken at the Fordham University Gymnasium. Between 1920-32, Nurmi set 20 world running records and won nine Olympic Gold Medals. He was one of the greatest middle distance runners in history. The photo was taken during Nurmi’s first visit to the United States. Upon arrival, he was welcomed by hundreds of Finnish Americans and ran his first big race on Jan. 6, 1925 at Madison Square Garden to a sellout crowd. He set a world record of 4:13.5 in the mile. Weber, pictured with Nurmi, was recognized as the world’s worst public speaker because of his unusual delivery. He was Fordham’s athletic director and American Olympic Track and Field trainer in 1920, 24, 28, 32 and 36. Lastly, there is a baseball connection. NY Giants manager John McGraw was always after Jake to move to the Polo Grounds permanently. The nm photo is embossed in the lower left corner by NY photographer Albert Rothschild.
