Lot 87. 1952-54 Pittsburgh Pirates Yearbooks. These three yearbooks mark three of the final four Branch Rickey years in Pittsburgh. Joe Garagiola is among the newcomers pictured in the 1952 yearbook, which has pencil writing and some ink throughout, primarily “x’s” and “c’s.” The 1953 yearbook is vg+ to ex. Ralph Kiner is pictured, as well as Garagiola, Heisman Trophy winner Vic Janowicz, and three rookies, the O’Brien twins and Roy Face. The 1954 yearbook, which is vg+ to ex, pictures Curt Roberts, the Pirates’ first African-American player, and Sam Jethroe, who appeared in two games for Pittsburgh. Nellie King, Jerry Lynch and Bob Purkey are among the newcomers. The yearbook contains a feature on “Greenberg Gardens.”
