Lot 86.  Pittsburgh Pirates Inaugural Yearbook – 1951. Uncommon yearbook features a tribute to Honus Wagner. Branch Rickey was the general manager, and Bing Crosby was an owner. The book pictures such Pirates favorites as Ralph Kiner, Danny Murtaugh as a player, Dale Long and rookie Bob Friend. Vg cover, ex contents.

Lot 87.  1952-54 Pittsburgh Pirates Yearbooks. These three yearbooks mark three of the final four Branch Rickey years in Pittsburgh. Joe Garagiola is among the newcomers pictured in the 1952 yearbook, which has pencil writing and some ink throughout, primarily “x’s” and “c’s.” The 1953 yearbook is vg+ to ex. Ralph Kiner is pictured, as well as Garagiola, Heisman Trophy winner Vic Janowicz, and three rookies, the O’Brien twins and Roy Face. The 1954 yearbook, which is vg+ to ex, pictures Curt Roberts, the Pirates’ first African-American player, and Sam Jethroe, who appeared in two games for Pittsburgh. Nellie King, Jerry Lynch and Bob Purkey are among the newcomers. The yearbook contains a feature on “Greenberg Gardens.”

Lot 88.  1956-58 Pittsburgh Pirates Yearbooks. These three yearbooks capture the onset of the Joe L. Brown era, which led to a World Championship for Pittsburgh fans in 1960. The 1956 edition is ex. Roberto Clemente is pictured, as is Dick Groat, Vernon Law, Curt Roberts, Frank Thomas and Roberts’ replacement, Bill Mazeroski. The yearbook for 1957 is vg-ex with some pencil writing on the roster. Bill Virdon is a newcomer, and Bennie Daniels is among the prospects. The 1958 issue, which is vg to vg-ex, features Danny Murtaugh in his first full season as Pittsburgh’s manager. Besides stars such as Clemente, Groat, Roy Face, Law, Bob Friend and Mazeroski, the publication shows Ted Kluszewski, Dick Stuart and Virdon.

Lot 235.  April 1915 Baseball Magazine Focusing on Walter Johnson. Essentially from cover to cover, this issue is filled with Johnson photos and articles. Recently, the Washington pitcher had announced that he was jumping to the upstart Federal League. The magazine cover presents superb artwork by J. F. Kernan, a prolific and widely respected illustrator who specialized in portraits, usually of middle-class Americans. The cover is detached for the inside pages, has “1915” printed on it, and has chips, creases and some tape along the edges. The central area with Johnson’s image is free of creases and displays well with brilliant colors. The contents are ex. The inside back cover has a color ad with Johnson promoting Remington guns and other sports equipment.

Lot 236.  5 Complete 1920s Mid-Week Pictorials with Cobb, Ruth, Many More. Published by the New York Times, these 11” x 16” publications are loaded with photos. 1. April 13, 1922. Two-page spread with photos of Ruth, Hornsby, McGraw, Huggins, Landis and others. One page features a photo of “Child Cue Prodigy Little Willie Mosconi of Philadelphia, 7 years old.” 2. Sept. 15, 1921. Two-page photo spread with Cobb, Speaker, Rousch, and others. 3. April 24, 1924. Two-page spread features Ruth, McGraw, Wilbert Robinson, Huggins, Altrock. Also, President Coolidge throwing out the first ball of the season. 4. Oct. 6, 1921. Six full pages of baseball photography with Anson, Mathewson, Speaker, McGraw, Mike Kelly, Bresnahan, Lajoie and Honus Wagner among others. 5. Aug. 23, 1923. Two-page spread of sports photography including baseball, tennis and boxing. Babe Adams, Jack Dempsey and a photo of Bill Tilden with Charlie Chaplin, Doug Fairbanks and Manuel Alonzo are present. Typical chipping of aged newsprint stock along with page separations is evident. The photos have the potential to make exceptionally nice displays.

Lot 237.  About 50 Newspaper Pages Chronicling the 1924, 1925 World Series. The Washington Senators participated in both, defeating the New York Giants in 1924 for the first World Championship, and then losing to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1925. About 25 individual pages record each series. The 1924 series is reported in the New York Times, and the 1925 series, in the New York Herald Tribune. The pages from the Times have chips around the edges, as well as tears on a number of horizontal folds. These pages are brittle. The Herald Tribune pages are much less brittle; they have edge chips and are generally free of tears. On Oct. 8, the day of the second game of the 1925 World Series, the Tribune reported the death of Christy Mathewson. A weekend Rotogravure section of the Times, printed on high-quality paper, presents team photos of the Giants and Senators.
