Pittsburgh Pirates   6 Lots

Lot 8.  PSA-Graded 1910 E90-2 American Caramel Pirates Card of Babe Adams. PSA has graded this card of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ star pitcher PR-FR 1. A pin hole dictates the grade. Otherwise, the card has a vg appearance with bold colors and no obvious creases away from the corners.
Winning Bid $61.

Lot 26.  Harry Pulliam (First National League President) Early 1900s Cigar Label, Bands. Pulliam served as president of the modern N.L. from 1903-09. These cigar-related collectibles are variously dated from 1905-09. The label has an nm appearance; close examination reveals a couple of very small border creases and a light crease running vertically from the top gold border to the top of the “A” in Harry. There are two cigars bands, one unused and nm, and the other, with a light stain on one end and a small crease on the other. Both display nicely and are very scarce.
Minimum Bid $75.

Lot 137.  1963 Baseball Hall of Fame Busts of Rogers Hornsby and Pie Traynor. The Hornsby statue is still sealed in the original box and mint. The Traynor bust has been removed from the box, which is present and ex-m with a price written in the upper right front corner. The figure is ex-m with very small orange rub marks from the box on his shoulders and the back of his cap, a tiny rub on the bill of the cap, a tiny spot of red on his neck and a very small chip in the upper left corner of the “plaque.”
Winning Bid $204.

Lot 143.  6 Photos of 1889 National League or American Association Baseball Teams. Each 5” x 7 ¼” photo is on a 6 ½” x 9” book plate page from the 1889 book Athletic Sports in America, England and Australia by Harry Clay and others. The book is very scarce and typically sells for $500 or more. Teams pictured in this collection are Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and Washington of the National League and Cincinnati, Columbus and Louisville of the American Association. The photos are ex-m to nm, and four of the pages are ex or better. Two have border damage. Although the players in each photo are not identified, these teams included such players as Billy Sunday, Jack Glasscock, Dummy Hoy and Pete Browning.
Winning Bid $92.

Lot 150.  1920s “Lucky Strike” Display Featuring Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher Lee Meadows. Henry Lee “Specs” Meadows pitched for the Pirates from 1923-1929. He was one of only a few players who wore glasses on the field in the early 20th century. Meadows led the National League in wins in 1926. The die-cut cardboard figure of Meadows offered here was part of an enormous “Lucky Strike Cigarettes” advertising display piece that also featured tennis star Howard O. Kinsey, Olympic champion swimmer Helen Wainwright and Olympic champion diver Stubby Kruger. The 13” X 28” cardboard figure of Meadows has been mounted onto a 22” x 28” piece of black hardboard that is suitable for framing. There is a moderate amount of chipping and creasing that does not inhibit the visually stunning presentation of this piece.
Winning Bid $121.

Lot 163.  Pittsburgh Pirates Programs, Three Rivers Stadium Opening Game Ticket Stubs. On July 16, 1970, the Pirates played their inaugural game at Three Rivers, losing to the Reds, 3-2. Two stubs in this collection were there. These are actual field box stubs, not proofs or commemoratives. In both cases, two sections of the ticket remain. One stub is ex+, and the other, vg+ to ex. They are accompanied by the 104-page magazine-format Three Rivers Stadium Souvenir Book. It contains information on construction of the stadium, Pirates history and photos, and features on Wagner, Clemente, Mazeroski, Stargell and the Waner Brothers. Ex-m+. This group includes one yearbook, from 1967. Besides Clemente, Mazeroski and Stargell, it picture rookies Bob Moose, Al Oliver, Bob Robertson, Richie Hebner and Manny Sanguillen. Ex-m. The programs are from: 1971 vs. Reds, g. 1974 vs. Giants, g-vg. 1975 vs. Padres, vg. 1977 (4) vs. Cubs g-vg, vg+ to ex, Braves ex, all scored, and Phils vg-ex. 1978 (Parker cover) vs. Reds, ex-m, scored, and (team cover) vs. Mets, ex with ticket stubs stapled to front, scored. 1979 (7), six with team covers. Three have tickets stapled to the front: vs. Braves vg, Phils ex, all scored. Without stubs, vs. Phils ex-m and vg-ex, and vs. Cubs, ex-m, all scored. Also, Pirates mascot on ball cover, vs. Astros, vg-ex, scored, ticket stubs stapled to front. 1981 vs. Phils, vg-ex, scored. 1982 (2) vs. Phils vg+ to ex and vs. Reds, vg, both scored. And 1983 (2) vs. Cubs and Padres, both g-vg and scored. 25 items.
