Baseball Autographs   39 Lots       »

Lot 131.  Mickey Mantle Signed Copy of Whitey and Mickey. Mantle wrote this book, subtitled An Autobiography of the Yankee Years, with Whitey Ford and Joseph Durso. Ex-m hardback published by Viking Press in 1977; ex dust jacket. On the front end-page, Mantle wrote: “To Phil, Best Wishes, Mickey Mantle.” The ballpoint signature is a bold, unimprovable 10, and “Phil” could be matted out. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $332.

Lot 132.  Willie Mays Autographed “The Catch” B&W 16” x 20” Photo. This dramatic photograph depicts Mays making “The Catch” of Vic Wertz’s drive into straightaway centerfield during Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. Mays boldly and neatly signed above the ball in the photo with blue sharpie. The signature is a gem mint 10. The photo, which is nm-m, comes with a “Say Hey” hologram. Kevin Keating authenticated the autograph. This is one of baseball’s most famous catches ever!
Winning Bid $148.

Lot 133.  Sandy Amoros Signature on an ONL White Ball. Amoros played two seasons with the New York Cubans before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950. He is best known for a game-saving catch that stopped the Yankees from rallying to win the 1955 World Series, the Dodgers’ only World Championsip while in Brooklyn. For years, Amoros was not allowed to leave Cuba, allegedly for angering Castro because he refused to manage a baseball team. He died in 1992. Gem mint 10 signature on an nm ball that has a stain on the panel above the autograph. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $148.

Lot 134.  Nolan Ryan Autograph on an Official American League Bobby Brown Ball. The ballpoint signature is a mint 9 on a nm-m ball, which comes in a ball holder on a wood base with a “Nolan Ryan” plaque. Apparently the signed ball and holder originally came from Publishers Clearing House. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $61.

Lot 135.  Al Schacht Autograph in a Book Personalized to HoF Manager Bucky Harris. A decent pitcher, Schacht is best remembered as the “Clown Prince of Baseball.” Harris was a good second baseman who earned a spot in the Hall of Fame as a manager. The two men were rookies with the Washington Senators in 1919 and played together in 1920 and 1921. Schacht’s signature is on the front end-page of My Own Particular Screwball, his “informal autobiography.” The autograph is personalized to “Bucky,” and in the inscription that follows, Schacht writes, in part, “You made a great pitcher out of me in 1919. You never got a hit off me.” The ballpoint signature, dated Aug. 7, 1958, is a mint 9. The book, a 1955 first edition missing the dust jacket, is vg-ex. Great Washington item! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $83.

Lot 136.  The Hustler’s Handbook Autographed by Bill Veeck. Veeck was enshrined posthumously at Cooperstown in 1991 for his contributions to baseball in a career that spanned four decades and five teams. He died in 1986. His impact on the game was significant. Loved by both the public and the players, he is known for his rule-breaking and publicity stunts. At the same time, he is more seriously respected for signing the first African-American player in the AL, Larry Doby, to the Cleveland Indians in 1947. This 344-page book, written with Ed Linn, offers Veeck’s insights concerning baseball. Published in 1965, this hardback is vg+ to ex with a vg dj that displays better. Veeck’s signature, which is relatively difficult to find, is a 9-10 of 10 on a blank page.
Winning Bid $168.

Lot 137.  1973 Program Signed by Mantle, Paige, Grove, Gehringer, Ford, Feller, Terry. This two-page 1973 Phillies Old-Timers Game program has signatures of: Bob Feller, 10 of 10. Whitey Ford, 6-7 over program text. Chas Gehringer, 10. Lefty Grove, 8-9 over his printed name. Mickey Mantle, nm 8 to mint 9. The Mantle signature is on a blank section of paper and could easily be matted and framed. Satchel Paige, nm 7 to nm-m 8. Wm H (Bill) Terry, 8-9. The signatures are on the inside of this ex program, generally near small photos of the players.
Winning Bid $245.

Lot 138.  12 Single-Signed Baseballs Including Bob Gibson, Doerr, Perez, Minoso, Bunning. All of the signatures are on the sweet spots of official MLB balls, which generally are at least nm-m: Minnie Minoso on an OAL Jackie Robinson commemorative baseball, nm 7. Tony Perez with ”HOF 2000,” 7-8. Bob Gibson with “HOF 81,” nm-m 8. Bob Doerr with “HOF 1986,” mint 9. Jim Bunning with “HOF 1996,” 8-9. Roberto Alomar, Pat Listach, Jim Gantner, Jeff Reardon, Dave Lopes, and Ruben Sierra, all 9s or 10s, and Joe Carter, an 8. Authenticated by Kevin Keating. The following autographs are all 10s: Bob Doerr with “HOF 1986,” Rollie Fingers with “HOF 92,” Frank Howard with “1968/1970 AL HR King,” John James with “NY Yankees 1958, 1960+61/1958 & 1961 World Champs,” Brooks Robinson with “HOF 83/1964 AL MVP,” Earl Weaver with ”HOF 96.” Jim Gentile, ball possibly game-used, 10. Mamie Peanuts Johnson, big 10 signature, ball stained. Bill Mazeroski with “HOF 01,” bold 10 signature with a dark ball stain on “azer” of his last name. Mike Torrez and Bucky Dent, 7-8. Lot 141.  5 Autographed Bats – Spahn, Slaughter, Herman, Mathews and Bauer. Two of the four Hall of Fame members signed 34” Louisville Slugger 180 bats: Enos Slaughter, and Eddie Mathews, who added “HoF ’78.” Both bats have “4” stamped on the knob, and both signatures are mint 9 to gem mint 10. Billy Herman signed a 34” Louisville Slugger #125 “Powerized” bat with “K55” on the knob. He added “H.O.F. 1975.” His signature also is strong, a 9-10. Signatures of Warren Spahn, with “HOF 73,” and Hank Bauer are on 34” Adirondack 302 bats. Spahn’s signature is a 10, and Bauer’s, a 9. The bats are nm or better. All five of these respected players have passed on. Signatures authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $366.

Lot 142.  Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell on a 1941 New York Giants Team Ball Signed by 24. Ott’s signature is comparatively difficult to come by, and there seem to be a good number of team-signed baseballs with clubhouse or ghost signatures of Ott. This one is real, rating a 3-4 on a deeply toned, lightly shellacked g 2 to vg 3 Reach “Official League” ball. Other signers include Ace Adams, Harry Gumbert, Bump Hadley, Carl Hubbell, Bill Lohrman, Ken O’Dea, Joe Orengo and Johnny Rucker. These and other signatures range from 1 to 4 and average 2-3. Hadley’s is one of the stronger signatures, and its presence suggests that the ball was signed early in the season. He played in only three games for the Giants before winding up in Philadelphia with the A’s to conclude his career. Hadley is best known for beaning Mickey Cochrane and ending his playing career. Hadley was a hard-throwing pitcher whose long suit was not control, and Cochrane lost track of the ball and didn’t get out of the way.
Winning Bid $138.

Lot 143.  1955 Cleveland Indians Team-Signed OAL Harridge Ball – 32 Signatures. Six future Hall of Fame members and other excellent players signed this ex-m ball, which is very lightly shellacked and lightly, evenly toned: Bob Avila, Sam Dente, Larry Doby, Hoot Evers, Ferris Fain, Bob Feller, Hank Foiles, Mike Garcia, Jim Hegan, Art Houtteman, Ralph Kiner, Red Kress, Bob Lemon, Bill Lobe, Stu Locklin, Al Lopez (sweet spot), Sal Maglie, Dale Mitchell, Don Mossi, Hal Naragon, Ray Narleski, Al Rosen, Jose Santiago, Herb Score (Rookie of the Year), Al Smith, George Strickland, Vic Wertz, Gene Woodling, Early Wynn and Bob Young. Ex-m ball with toning. The signatures are 9s and 10s. Outstanding example! Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $321.

Lot 144.  ONL Feeney Ball Signed by 17 Dodgers Including Hall of Fame Members. Our consignor had this ball signed at a 1980s Dodgers Fantasy Camp. All of the ballpoint signatures are gem mint 10s. Ted Sizemore signed in red. The other signatures are in blue or black. One panel alone is worth the price of admission to the camp – and to ownership of this ball. The panel is very nicely signed by Duke Snider, Preacher Roe, Don Drysdale and Carl Erskine. Other signers are Ken McMullen, Johnny Podres, Duke Snider (he’s on the ball twice), Carl Furillo, Tommy Davis, Clem Labine, Wes Parker, Ron Perranoski, Ralph Branca and Sweet Lou (Johnson). Tom Lasorda signed the sweet spot. The ball also has a Roy Campanella clubhouse signature. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $185.

Lot 145.  Bobby Valentine Bat Signed by 35 Members of the 1998 New York Mets. The signatures on this Valentine model 35” nm Louisville Slugger 125 bat are in bold blue sharpie. Winning Bid $92.
