Lot 247. 1910 “Reconciliation of Corbett and Choynski” Postcard with Jim Jeffries. In 1889, Jim Corbett and Joe Choynski faced off three times. The second meeting of these rival San Franciscans was especially brutal, with Corbett knocking out Choynski in the 27th round. Their rivalry was especially intense because Choynski was a Jewish laborer, and Corbett was a Christian who worked in a bank. In 1910, Jim Jeffries got the two men together, and all three are pictured in the 1910s postcard from Rob Roy Novelty Publishing, which describes the 27-round fight as the “World’s Greatest Battle.” Vg+ to ex with corner wear and a small corner crease visible on the back. Unusual.

Lot 250. Ticket Stub from the July 21, 1927 Jack Dempsey vs. Jack Sharkey Fight. This non-title bout represents one of boxing’s less shining moments. Ten months earlier, Dempsey had lost the heavyweight title to Gene Tunney. Facing Sharkey before a crowd of 72,000 at Yankee Stadium, Dempsey trailed through the first six rounds. In the seventh, Dempsey hit Sharkey with what, by most accounts, were a series of low blows. As Sharkey protested to the referee, Dempsey knocked himout with a left hook. Part of Dempsey’s image can be seen on the back of the stub, which is technically g-vg with a couple of creases in the top left and looks better.

Lot 251. “Working Press” Ticket Stub for the Sept. 8, 1950 Willie Pep vs. Sandy Sadler Bout. In the third of their memorable and unusual confrontations, Sadler retained the featherweight title by scoring a TKO over Pep. A crowd of almost 39,000 viewed the fight at Yankee Stadium. The “Postpone- ment Stub” is attached to a second part of the ticket, which says “Working Press, Ladies Not Admitted.” The stub was neatly torn form the rest of the ticket. Technically vg-ex with an ex appearance.

Lot 252. Autographed 8” x 10” Photo of Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner. In 1975 in a fight in Cleveland, Wepner knocked down Ali in the ninth round. The knockdown was controversial because some observers thought Wepner was standing on Ali’s foot. Regardless, it was ruled a knockdown, making Wepner the only fighter to knock down Ali when he was the reigning champion. This b&w 8” x 10” photo, “9th Round – Wepner Drops Ali,” captures Wepner walking away from Ali, who is on the canvas. Remote-generation photo. Ali signed by his image, and so did Wepner. The signatures are gem mint 10s. Authenticated by Kevin Keating.
Winning Bid $50.

Lot 255. 1940s-50s Premiums of Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, Max Schmeling. An unknown supplier produced these b&w 8” x 10” glossy photos that have blank backs, white borders and the athlete’s name in signature-style script. The SCD 2007 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards has begun a checklist of the baseball premiums. The Marciano photo has creases in the bottom corners; ex appearance. The two other photos average ex with corner impressions from an album. Great photos of the Hall of Fame pugilists.
